New Serial Numbers

Hi,

I'm toying with the idea of modernizing Zebra's and Filterscape's serial number scheme. It would then match the one in MFM2. MFM2's scheme looks pretty much the same, it's a plain serial number attached to a user name. The difference is, the underlying code is more elegant and looks far more sophisticated. It's so stunningly elegant, Team Arschkarte have been too startled to release anything mentionable yet :)

This transition would naturally mean that everyone needs to enter the new codes at one point. To make this as painless as possible I would have the old and new scheme co-existing for a couple of months. Hence everyone can just update the software without any trouble and at some point fetch the new serial number & register with that.

It shouldn't be too much of a hassle. It would also pave the way for a userweb where people can look up their serials and stuff, update contact details etc. - which paves the way for u-he stuff on Audiomidi and Don't Crack 8)

Any thoughts?

;) Urs

Sounds good. The transition period should make it fairly painless.

a user account where i could get my reg would be better than finding the email every time :)

Yeah, you know, the guys who use a keygen on Win and release it as a Try B4 Buy on Mac. Pretty lame style...

Sounds fine with me... I say screw the dual code setup. If someone wants the new version they can register while they go to download it. If they don't like it they can keep what they have. If it's a new user it wont matter. Keep the code clean the way you want it.

Personally, I don't have a problem with this kind of thing, users just need to be organised and keep their serial numbers where they can find them if they need them. Which is generally good practice anyway.

Code elegance aside, I assume one key reason for changing the protection is to get a stronger protection and make cracks or new versions harder to do? Anything that protects our investment like this is generally welcomed, as long as we don't have to jump through too many hoops in the process... ;)

Go for it. I trust you to make the transition easy on the customer.

Sounds great to me. I agree with vieris about simplifying the code and just switching to new serials. It doesn't break the software on someones desktop/laptop today and if they want the new version it only takes a few minutes to get the new serial.

Go for it, Urs. Sounds like a good plan to me...

No problem, go for it.

Anything that helps you fight the crackers is ok with me.

Yeah,

One problem is, many cutomers are not as computer savvy as most people on KVR. They know how to launch their DAW and how to operate it, but they dislike everything else including having to enter codes again. And as with every transition, there'll be cases where not everything runs smooth.

Hence I think it's cool to make it painless. The new version could hint at the website where to get new codes etc., like, the first time you open it it displays a little message, not like a nag screen, just like a little subtle reminder...

Hmmm... gotta think it through...
