CPU hungry? (fixed)

Just bought Sylenth, it's quite a nice synth, but it seems to have quirks. For instance, in one project I have 2 instances of Sylenth and one instance of Sampletank 2. Almost nothing at all, I frequently use way more than this in projects. But I'm getting some small clicks and pops during playback, and it ain't the fault of Sampletank. I've never really had this problem with any of my other hungry synths (z3ta) unless I load like 6-7 instances. I've got plenty of RAM and a good processor, so I shouldn't be getting these issues. The weird thing is the CPU usage meter in Sonar isn't maxing out or anything.

Something else I've notice is when switching presets, sometimes they don't play, aka the audio engine drops out and I have to restart it. Not a huge problem, but rather irritating when you're trying to scroll through many different presets.

This synth has a great sound, so I'm a bit dissapointed by these oddities. I use Sonar 6 producer edition. Have any other Sonar users had these problems?

Maybe this is interesting for you:

I'm currently using a PC with Windows. I have an M-Audio soundscard that works well but when I type text into a text editor while there is music being played (even the low CPU consuming playback of an mp3 file) then I have clicks and stuttering very regularly.

PCs are great.

Have you upgraded to the newest version 2.0?

Post

I honestly don't know. I bought Sylenth a week ago... would that've been v2?

Is your processor single or dual core?

You can check which version of Sylenth you have from the GUI. If you have V2.0, a dual core will serve you much better

Yeah I think I've read somewhere on this support forum that a user reported the same and I think lennard said it could happen on older single core CPU's, not sure if he has a fix for it yet. Also not sure which thread it was, but it was after the release of v2.0 for sure.

*EDIT* Yeah, it's on page 4 of the thread in which Lennard announced the release ( http://www.kvraudio.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=222167 ). I don't think there's a fix for it yet (that issue on some older single cores), but I heard Lennard is working on a version that is fixing some bugs users reported in the 2.0 release ...
*EDIT2* Hmm... as you say you have a good CPU, I guess you mean at least dual core ? And I also think it might be a different problem, since you're talking of 'small clicks and pops' ...

'tis a dual core processor, and I have dual-core processing enabled in Sonar.

Well that's good if he's aware of issues with Sonar. This isn't exactly crippling, just rather unexpected from a non CPU-taxing project. The preset switches causing the audio to quit is actually more annoying than the little pops.

Hi, this does not seem to be Sonar issue as Sylenth1 runs perfectly fine in Sonar here. Does this happen too when you do not open Sylenth1's GUI, or only when it's opened? Does it happen when you use a single instance of Sylenth1 in an empty project? Can you find any event or something that triggers the CPU usage? Have you tried running Sylenth1 in another host? For example SaviHost:

http://www.hermannseib.com/english/savihost.htm

Just download it, rename it Sylenth1.exe and put it in the same folder as Sylenth1.dll.

Do the GUI knobs respond very slow maybe? Not sure if that's the same issue, but some people seem to have that problem so it might be related. Also, can you try it on another PC?

Hmmm, I'll try a more thorough testing of it and see if I can get any insights.

It seems that other synths are popping a bit too. Worked on a track last night with Albino 3 and Sonik Synth 2, same issues. I changed my playback latency from 10 ms to 20 ms, and that seems to help quite a bit. Very strange though... I don't recall changing it, yet don't remember getting these artefacts until recently. :? If it's in fact the latency then my apologies.

I'll play around with Sylenth more to see if I still get the preset change dropouts.

Can you check if the colors in your OS are set to 16 or 32 bit?
If 16 bit, try setting to 32 bit colors.
Please report if this makes any difference.

I use Sonar 7.02 on an Intel Quad Core, and I get the clicks and dropouts with Sylenth (especially when using the pitch/mod wheels) only when Sylenth's GUI is open. I close it, the audio glitches disappear.

Try to disable the X-Ray function in Sonar and see if that helps :D
