ADAT Out / Focusrite Saffire Pro 26 I/O

Hello all,
I am wondering if anyone has had any success getting the ADAT Output of a Receptor connected to a Saffire Pro 26 interface. I have read that others have used other ADAT capable devices to do so, but I have not had any luck.
I have tried selecting different ADAT channels in the Receptor Mixer. I am running my Saffire in standalone mode and I have read through the Saffire user guide to ensure my settings are correct.
It seems pretty straight forward so I am really at a loss. I just thought I would try asking here to see if there is something I am missing.
Is it as simple as enabling the ADAT channels in the Receptor to get ADAT output?
This might be a Focusrite question but thought I would start here first.
Thanks,
Dustin

I can only speak to having done it successfully going from Receptor to a Steinberg MR816 but the concept should be similar and work. Make sure whatever applicatio/control panel and/or device setup in your DAW for your hardware has the ADAT inputs live. Select whichever ADAT out in the Receptor mixer and it should send signal to the corresponding channel on your interface. Methinks you are correct in that something is rotten in the state of Focusrite setup. Not too rotten, though, probably just overlooking something small yet important.

Hamlet is right... Sorry, Buscemi is right. You should check your Saffire and see if all the parameters are set correctly. Plug it into your computer and open the control panel. You need to set the sync parameter correctly. ADAT is a digital signal and it won't work without sync (or you will hear crackling sounds when playing...).
I'm using the Receptor together with a MOTU 828mkII and a Behringer ADA-8000, everything in standalone mode and it works perfectly. The Receptor is the master sync and it is synced to the 828mkII with SPDIF (I'm not using the ADAT from the Receptor because I don't need multiple outputs). The 828mkII is connected to the ADA-8000 with ADAT in/out, so I have 8 balanced XLR inputs and outputs for my MOTU. I have also other synthetizers connected to the MOTU. With setup. I can easily plug the 828mkII into my computer and be ready to record in just a few seconds.
Hope this helps

oops, good add with the sync via SPDIF, I did set my MR816 as master clock over SPDIF in my scenario though it really doesn't make a difference until you can actually get some signal moving
Also, I definitely don't want to imply there can't be something wrong with the Receptor side of things but since there really aren't many setting necessary to get the ADAT stuff set up on the Receptor side. Not likely a hardware issue either.
So hopefully you can find something with the Focusrite and get this stuff working. Personally, I'm not needing those channels much since Uniwire is working great for me, but it is really convenient if you need it.

Thanks guys, I appreciate the feedback! I will revisit the Saffire control panel although I did make sure that the ADAT sync was enabled for the 1-8 port.
Regarding the SPDIF sync, my understanding is that you need to do that when you intend on using the physical outs of the Receptor in conjunction with Uniwire or ADAT. Given that the physical outs and ADAT channel 1 & 2 are mirrored, I planned to strictly use the ADAT outs to avoid any audio sync issues. Is my thinking correct?

SPDIF sync is not absolutely necessary in your case. Sync can be made via ADAT as well.
Make sure you check the right parameters in the Receptor Setup control panel and in the Focusrite Control Panel:
- First of all, make sure you have the latest version of the Saffire Pro 26 driver... I've read that the older version had problems like ADAT unstable sync... (you can read more about that on the Sound on Sound review of the Saffire pro 26, available for free on their website)
- PLEASE READ PAGE 20 of the Saffire Pro 26 manual. The Standalone mode is not that easy to set up. Do exactly what is written on that page, and you will fix your problem...
- Sync source: decide which one you want as a master clock (Receptor or Saffire). I would suggest Receptor, since its clock source only has "internal" or "SPDIF". If you want your Saffire to be the master, then you should use an SPDIF cable (in and out) for synchronization.
- Make sure you have the same sample rate: 44.1khz, 48khz, or higher. If I remember correctly, if you choose a sample rate higher than 48khz, the number of ADAT channels will be divided by 2 (4 channels instead of
.
It should work, and I am almost certain that the problem comes from your Saffire settings (Standalone mode).
Hope that this helps

Hi Surfrider,
Regarding set-up of the Saffire Pro 26:
- First connect it to a computer, and access the SaffireControl Panel.
- Set Stand-alone mode to "Tracking".
- Set the sampling rate to the desired setting.
- You do not have to worry about setting the digital sync at this stage.
- Quit SaffireControl Pro, then switch off the Pro 26 (must be done in this order - closing the control panel sends the settings to the hardware).
- Connect the ADAT out of your Receptor to the Pro 26 ADAT In.
- Switch on Saffire Pro 26.
- On the front of the unit, hold down the S1/Dim button if you have plugged the Receptor into ADAT 1 (or S2/Mute if using ADAT In 2) for 2-3 seconds. This will tell the Pro 26 to sync to that respective ADAT channel and route the ADAT channels through the analogue outputs.
I have a feeling that it is this last step that is being missed in your set-up.

Hey guys,
Just a quick update regarding my issue of ADAT sync with my Saffire Pro. I finally was able to get a laptop up to our rehearsal studio to reset the Saffire control panel settings and I am happy to report that it is working! I believe the main step I was not doing is shutting down the control panel to send the settings to the Saffire. Once I did that, everything worked as expected.
Thanks to everyone for the detailed responses! This forum has been an invaluable resource on many occasion.
Cheers,
Dustin
