Using compressor

Can someone give me some pointers about how to use the compressor in Sylenth 1 properly. I know that compressors are used to pull down sounds that exceed a certain threshold. I have read up on what the ratio, threshold, attack and release knobs are for but i have noticed on some of the presets that when i actually turn all these knobs, they don't seem to make much difference to the sound. Do i just keep turning all these knobs into different positions until i am happy with the kind of sound i am after? Or is there another method which i should be using? I have a book which explains compressors and it says i need to lower the threshold so that the gain reduction meter reads -8 and -10dB on the loudest part of the signal. What gain reduction meter are they talking about? Is that the meter on the mixer section of Sylenth 1? Because if it is then that meter doesn't change at all no matter what the threshold is on. I also have a seperate plugin called an MAnalyzer which shows the the frequency and dB of the sound that i am playing. When i play an instrument in Sylenth 1 then this graph shows the sound peaking at about -24dB and yet on the meter in the mixer section on Sylenth 1 it shows a completely different reading of -3dB. Does anyone know why this is?

Maybe try splitting up the sectons of your question a little.

Google - > compressor take it one day at a time, start with learning what each function does and master it..fwiw filters n compression is the name of the game imho
