Patch Contest #5?

Any ideas, suggestions or preferences for what the next ZPC task should be?
There were a couple of suggestions from elxicano and MC in the ZPC4 thread - they can, if they want, add them to this thread.
(I'm assuming that Urs hasn't yet sorted out his patch designing website?)

I had a suggestion. The user can take any 2 released presets from the patch page, be it Zebralette, ZCM, or Z2.
With that preset the only thing they're allowed to add/change are the 4 XYs, and modwheel/Aftertouch assignments.
With the XYs at the center position, modwheel 0 and AT 0 the patch should sound identical to the original.
But from that point on the sky's the limit. I think it'd be a good challenge that can show off how wildly a sound can change from XYs/perf controllers. It might also get people that are put off from creating a sound from scratch a chance to participate. And with Urs' ever-generious licenses to be won, maybe we could also promote people w/o Z2 to join in. They can remix with the demo and possibly win a license of Z2. I don't want to speak for Urs though! It's just an idea.
Submitter should give 2 presets per submission:
original bank/creator patch.h2p
their modified patch,same name-PC5.h2p
So for example, say I decided to remix Factory preset 3 Fillers/HS RM Fragile.h2p I would submit:
HS RM Fragile.h2p
HS RM Fragile-PC5.h2p
And to the maintainer I'd give the source package the preset was found in.

0. Best use of the cluster comb filters (before they are axed!).
1. Bowed instruments
2. Human voice (singing or talking)
3. Foley sounds (gun shot, car crash, etc...)
4. Only one module type (all combs, all FM, all OSc, etc..)
5. Mod wheel morphing patch

Funnily enough that was going to be one of my suggestions (could just call it "Vocal" or "Formant"), others being (and these are old suggestions of mine):kodama wrote:Human voice (singing or talking)
Synth Secrets: make a patch based upon the techniques in Sound on Sound's "Synth Secrets" series - would certainly make for a good educational task.
Osc>Comb Restrictive: make a patch using just an Osc and Comb module in series, but with unrestricted use of the effects grid.

One thing I really like about #4 is that it hi-lights something that Zebra is great at, but (IMHO) is not represented much in the available patch banks...

Hey, don't be so quick to count me outhakey wrote:Sorry bmrzycki, it was you and MC that had suggested the ideas, not elxicano (should have actually checked the thread).
I had suggested a contest for evolving textures. I had just figured since many would be using MSEG for the drum patch, that it would go hand in hand for another contest for evolving textures.
I'll post more ideas as they come up, but right now I don't even know if I'll be able to participate this round.

That would actually be a good topic for 2.5 since the new XMFs allow for some extra possibilites with 2 x 2 bandpass filters in parallel. Each.hakey wrote:Funnily enough that was going to be one of my suggestions (could just call it "Vocal" or "Formant")kodama wrote:Human voice (singing or talking)

Well that's worth bearing in mind - that's if the 2.5 official release is imminent?Urs wrote:That would actually be a good topic for 2.5 since the new XMFs allow for some extra possibilites with 2 x 2 bandpass filters in parallel. Or maybe we can just base it on 2.5 regardless of the fact that it's a beta?? I really don't want to have add 2.31 back on the computer and I think by now that most who participate/judge have access to 2.5.

I think that's cool because afaiaa 2.5b9 is right there, sound-wise. Any bug/flaw to be fixed seems to be a matter of user interface. With the exception of the Cluster comb mode which yet has to be ditched for something useful.elxicano wrote:Or maybe we can just base it on 2.5 regardless of the fact that it's a beta?? I'd definitely prefer that myself. I'm just not so sure that absolutely everybody would be happy using the beta (there was at least one comment to that effect in the ZPC4 thread).elxicano wrote:Or maybe we can just base it on 2.5 regardless of the fact that it's a beta?? What does everyone else think?

it would be cool to have a patch contest based on 2.5 even if in beta, that would be a good way to learn and experiment with the new available tool.
The only drawback is: is the preset structure going to change (drastically) in the final version (i think Urs said beta9 s going to be the last...)...
In other words: is there a risk of not being able to use the presets in 2.5 final? or to have them sound completely different (see latest 2.3-->2.5 presets issue...)
