Maybe they are all good, but in the mix some frequencies can make some ringing resonant sound, which can muddy the mix.Kim (esoundz) wrote:None of them. All frequencies are good!

I found that if i cut around 1000Hz, i get better sound in the mix overall.
Or, what frequencies to avoid(reduce) in the mix?

Fingernails on chalkboard = about 4kHz. That's a good frequency to cut a bit. Maybe that resonates with something in our ears? There may be a few others as well.
Other than that, wouldn't it depend on the specific context? Cut to fit, I'd imagine... if you have a really busy mix with a dozen instruments peaking at, say, 550 Hz, you'd need to do some eq so that they could all fit in together. (Even so, you'd probably want to adjust the mix and arrangement first, right?)

This has confused me (like many things)!
I agree with Kim and whyterabbyt's good points - particularly as when I create a new song from scratch, clearly the issue is which sounds to pick whilst recording/arranging which work together - but is there something different when purely mixing someone else's work with particular frequencies being bad?
I am intrigued by your point Igro - please are you able to post up some examples of what you mean?

Ok,i will explain.
When i create pads, i notice that on some notes sounds produce really unpleasant resonance, especially on ooh-aah pads. Is this thing natural at all, or i should try to rid off it?

Resonance increase with reverb.

At a guess, this is just an interaction between the harmonics of the individual notes, possibly because with equal temperament a strong harmonic of a lower note will be subtly different to the fundamental of a note played more than an octave above. This can sound harsh in some cases, depending on the chord and how much filtering is applied to the waveforms.

It's not chord. It consist of two different waves by the same pitch, but detuned. Especially last one give this bad self-oscillating effect.
