Hi guys

I am playing with ACE from couple days now.
I am new to modular synthesis and just experiment with ACE.
I read the manual but you know... there are so many possible cable connections :)
I was wondering if you have any tips how to get unusual interesting sounds.

cheers

Not really much help, but I use a method to learning it, that you might want to try.
Try to get a set of some basic kinds of instrument presets done without using any cables.
For instance...a horn, keys, bass, and so on.
Then go to one of them, and try to add a cable, from input to output to any mods you can think of, with only your first connection made. Turn knobs of those mods associated, until you here it's effect on the overall tone. If it doesn't agree with you, then reload the preset and try again using a different mod connection to try. If something clicks and sounds good, save as no#2 of that, and move on to make another mod connection. The trial and error method I guess.

I'm having a hard time figuring out why, some of my presets need the mod wheel routed differently to be of use. I can't always get the mod wheel settings to work, even when they seem to be routed the same as ones where the mod wheel works.

Ace is great at doing chord sounds though, with using just 3 stacks, can sound like a 6 note chord sometimes. The voice tunings are really convenient to try different chord notes out quickly.

Thanks mcnoone

I see experiment is the key.
Saving every step of progress as a new preset is a very good idea ! I found myself finding a good tone, not saving it, tweaking it further and going in the wrong direction with the sound. The undo button is my friend then :D

Do you guys have any specific cable connection that you often try if it works?

Here's a couple, one that does phase modulation and one that does frequency modulation, of LFO1. The PM uses LFO2 on 'tap map', and the FM mixes a couple of sources - LFO2 and white noise-> resonant filter ... it's *pretty* close to standard PM or FM, but each with a little bit of a twist that shows off what makes ACE cool ...

Tweaking the waveform of LFO2 or in the FM patch, the resonant filter, are pretty quick ways to get different sound, or turning on unison or some effects etc.
