Problem solved - thanks Xiang.

When sending a compressed instrument, e.g. rar or zip, ??.component or ??.vst file (where ?? is the name of your instrument),from a Windows pc to a Mac user, make sure it's actually the ??.component file or ??.vst they are placing in the AU and VST directories i.e. /Audio/Plug-ins/Components or /Audio/Plug-ins/vst respectively, and not simply extracting the compressed file straight to the Components or vst folder without checking what is being extracted there.
As the hierarchy of the compressed component or vst file may be as such as it would be extracted inside a folder named "??.component" or "??.vst" - in other words their Mac would see only a ??.component or ??.vst FOLDER and will not recognise an instrument being present.

On a Windows system the AU or VST for Mac created with Windows Maize Sampler is seen as a folder named ??.component or ??.vst, but on a Mac those exact same folders are seen as bundles, not folders.

So,after extracting, the Mac recipient of your instruments should simply check it's the ??.component or ??.vst file they see and not a ??.component or ??.vst folder or a content folder.

I hope reading this doesn't do your heads in as much as it did mine composing it;)

Yeah, one mac a lot special folders are considered as a bundle file, such as AU .compoent. You have to copy the entire .component folder the /Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/Component.
