How do I control the release time of an effect when using MIDI notes to trigger the effect?

Is it possible to control the release of an effect when using MIDI notes to trigger the effect?

Listen to this clip (with a distortion effect) and notice the sharp click at the 6 second mark. That is when the triggering MIDI note ends. I've tried to adjust the Envelope Release but there is always a click.
