ive got a quadcore running at 2.6/ 2.7 gigs so since mu uses only one core, (or is it like reason using 1 core graphics/1 core processing. hence sorta 2 cores. is that enough power to do a complete song. when i say complete, i mean, not like the extremely simple demo songs, but something you could hear that might be heard on the radio. mutools sounds very good no doubt about that but, since i just started using it, i cant make a well informed decision whether or not this can be comfortably done.
id like to see some powerful demo tracks other then the simple 4 track songs in the demos. ill tell you that my current song which uses a 2osc bassline synth and one mudrum uses about 6.8 cpu. the problem im having is that i cant just do a full song to test mutools because it only allows 4 tracks. so i need to know given my pc is it powerful enough to make some full songs. when i say full, i mean, a bass track, 3 lead tracks, 1 or 2 pad tracks, a few atmo, a few fx tracks, and a couple of mudrums. hence a complete track.
im really trying to find a replacement for reason. since mu only uses1 core, the closest thing i could compare mu to is reason 3/4. my plan is to do all my work in mu like i did in reason. in the old days, reason 3/4 was very powerful for having one core, you hardly ever ran out of cpu till they added thor. what do people think of mus synths and fx as far as cpu is concerned. im not looking for amazing and advanced synths and effects anyway. after all, if you compared mu to an 80s or 90s hardware studio you would have the same power as in mu. and people did amazing things.
also, i notice that mux is said to be able to build fx modules. would you consider the parametric eq, or compressor fx to work like the real thing. like wise other built fx? what exactly can mu do? if possible id like to see some power user songs. and please specify what kind of pc you have too. or tell me if i have enough power. i mean 1 core, is only so powerful. i the one cores go up to 3.2 ghz. so 2.6 is still pretty powerful? thanx.

I have an old PC with Pentium 4, 3 Ghz (one core with multithreading) and I have troubles if I use Mulab synths and fx because they eat a lot of CPU.
But it's fine with the VSTs I use.

Note that MuLab 4 is (much) more efficient than MuLab 3!
Also note that MuLab's sound engine does not make any compromise on sound-quality and that may cause a bit higher cpu usage.

Soon there will be a new MuLab 4 package with which you can explore MuLab Free to full extent, even with more than 4 tracks. When you go beyond the bounds of MuLab Free, there will be a regular voice alert saying "Please ugrade your MuLab". When you stay within the bounds, no such voice alert. But this way you can try out MuLab Free with eg 16 tracks and see how that works for you
This also solves the need for a demo version, as we discussed here on the forum last year.
This new MuLab 4 pre-release package will be available one of the days.

I was quite curious as well and I can tell you, I was very surprised afterwards...AstralExistence wrote: id like to see some powerful demo tracks other then the simple 4 track songs in the demos. ill tell you that my current song which uses a 2osc bassline synth and one mudrum uses about 6.8 cpu. the problem im having is that i cant just do a full song to test mutools because it only allows 4 tracks. so i need to know given my pc is it powerful enough to make some full songs. when i say full, i mean, a bass track, 3 lead tracks, 1 or 2 pad tracks, a few atmo, a few fx tracks, and a couple of mudrums. hence a complete track.
I did a little trance tune for Jo to support MuLab further...and to see, where my CPU power ends up...
MuLab isn't as efficient as Reason is (of course not, no other program is
This trance tune I did (I think you'll hear and see it later) uses about 40% of one core on my Q6600, which runs @2.4GHz, so there is a lot of headroom...
MuLab is capable of very complete songs by using the internals on a "modern" CPU (mine is a little bit older though) and with a little bit of "freezing" there is very little need of more...
Of course, if you want to use a lot of CPU eating Vsts, there you will notice the difference to multicore supporting hosts quite earlier, but I personally have only very little need to use VSTs in Mulab, it's internals sounds really amazing...you'll see

I think you'll manage with M4. Depending on what and how many vst's you use of course, but that's obvious. You can always mix the parts that use many cpu down and use it as audio part of course if you manage to get into trouble.
For the time being that is. I think that M5 is planned for this year so the wait won't be that long and if you buy M4 now, you'll get a free upgrade to M5 I think

M5 out this year? Though I like the idea of a rapid release scheduleit would mean my soon to be purchasing M4 a bit redundant. I may as well wait til M5! Now you're probably going to say its still worth buying, but when I look at how few updates there were for M3,the value of the software decreases.Nielzie wrote:

It's just an idea, but I'd rather pay a bit extra to get updates t M6. Is that selfish? I admit I'm no programmer and have little idea on how much work really goes into making software but it does make me feel a bit short changed, sorry.

Don't forget that if you buy a MuLab 4 UL User License now, you get a free upgrade ticket to M5 UL as well!
See http://www.mutools.com/mulab-shop.html
So why wait?

I'm not sure I follow.. You'd rather use M3 for almost a year and then pay the upgrade to M5 instead of upgrading to M4 now, use it almost a year and then get a free upgrade to M5?sadhakayuj wrote:M5 out this year? I'm also not sure that it will be released this year to be honest, but I think I read that somewhere. If multicore will be in M5 and it's a top priority than I'm sure a lot of users would be pleased if it was released asap, together with some other nice features of course.
I believe Jo is extremely generous with his pricing and releasing scheme. Jo recently found out that I ordered my M3 UL somewhere in 2010 for me, which would give me a free upgrade to M4. Now between M3 and M4 there has been done a lot of work, with great progression and I don't even have to pay now
Similar situation now with M4 and M5.
No band limits, aliasing is the noise of freedom!

Your view is based on the assumption I am actually using mu-lab. I have little time to use my laptop let alone make music and its likely to be like that for several months yet! Mu-lab is brilliant though I've only toyed with the free version I want to upgrade from Muzys 3. So I won't be using mu-lab free v3/4 for a year I'll use Muzys. I'm in no rush to upgrade and can't afford to keep upgrading. I understand you saying the upgrade is to v5 but, with utmost respect to Jo, how many bugs are likely to appear in the initial release?
I really am not trying to disrespect anyone or make out Jo is not offering good value, just that if v5 is likely out this year, then for me it'd be better to wait. I have absolutely no problem with Muzys but I prefer Mu-lab's ease of use and simple layout, and, to be honest, I'm looking forward to being able to use Mu-Lab fully. Also if Jo adds my request for midi controller templates in v5 and I bought v4 I would be stuck with v5's initial release. Saying that, I assumed when the offer to upgrade includes v5 it doesn't mean future upgrades for v5?
I hope I haven't offended anyone I'm just trying to consider the most cost effective option for ME. I only have part time job and am trying to start business from scratch whilst bringing up a family, so my income is very limited. If I could afford to I'd be willing to purchase every major release, I'm not tight with money
Thank you for your opinions...
