I've been busy in the last weeks...
30 new effect patches!

Note: These patches require Mulab 4.1!!

The big gun first: Room Reverb

I've always wanted to do a reverb based on delays only. No modulation allowed. I read a lot, tried a lot, got frustrated a lot.
The final breakthrough was courtesy of a Quantec Yardstick emulation by Guenther Fleischmann in the NI Reaktor user library.
I took the delay times and the L/R distribution from there and the _only_ thing left was some level setting and deal with the limitations of Mulab (e.g. no feedback allowed) to the best of my abilities. But then Mulab is not Reakor or Synthedit.
As a result this >180 module monster sounds not that great on big spaces, but very decent on smaller ones. It's by no means a replica of the above!
And it is different to usual reverbs! It's not that lush expansive sound, but, on headphones, you think you are listening to a real room. On any acoustic instrument like piano, guitar, sax it works very well.

It's best as a room simulation.
Setup is a bit different as well. Pre-delay is there, but not really needed, as the unit is based on delays anyway.
Reverb Time is of lesser importance as well. Room Damping and Density will change the reverb character most significantly.
Don't hesitate to pull the reverb level up, your source will just be placed further into the room.
And don't forget to restrict the input with the Pre-Filter

Internally it's one room size only (at the moment).
There is a second unit (Room Reverb EX), which adds filters in the Density path. As there are 16 of such filters, it adds to the cpu hit of the unit. The extra filter can be used e.g for adding extra sparkle or tame some of the rare occasion where the instrument and the room create unwanted resonances. Generally the reverb's frequency response is flat and any resonances come in and out quickly.

There are a few patches created to show the capabilities.

Next are the Mid-Side Effects:

These give access to the Mid (=mono=L+R) and the Side (L-R) signal of a stereo input. Try them on some recent commercial mixes. Quite educational!

- Mid-Side Processor: Lets you adjust the Mid and Side levels seperately (think Voxengo MSED)
- Mid-Side EQ: Adds 2 EQ bands to the above. E.g. boost low in the Mid and boost high in the Side path.
- Mid-Side Ezy EQ: The poor cousine of the above. 1 band only that, when you increase Gain, cuts at frequency in the Mid and boost the same amount at the side. E.g. create some space in the middle of your mix.
- Mid-Side Compression: Adds a compressor in the Mid and Side path. Both compressors share the same setting. The Compressor Input let you decide which signal gets compressed. E.g. compress the Mid without affecting the dynamics on the Side.

Support Modules:

- Phase-Reverse L&R: reverses the phase by 180 degree of a stereo input signal. Something like you find on mixing consoles.
- Phase-Reverse Left Channel: Same as above but for the left channel only
- Phase-Reverse Right Channel: Same as above but for the right channel only
- Swap Channels: The Input stereo L-R channels are swaped to a R-L output. Can be used for funny applications like a panned left instrument with it's reverb panned right (add the module in the Session MuX between the instrument rack send and the reverb rack)

Extra Modules: some unpublished units that came out of my 'call for effects' plus some 'leftovers':

DiGiTs proposed
- Audio Triggered Flanger: Send audio into this unit and as soon the Threshold is reached, the Flanger kicks in. The duration of the flanger can be set with the Envelope Time. The flanger has an external modulation input.
- Audio Triggered Flanger 2: The same as the above but with modwheel to modulate the Flanger.
- Green-Red Unit: Two effect paths that can be crossfaded with the Green/Red knob. Both sides offer a Highpass filter, 2 EQ bands and saturation/distortion, the red side adds a compressor at the beginning.
- MultiBand Distortion: I added a second (different) distortion unit to the previous MultiBand Saturation patch. You can blend between the 2 distortion units.

- Gater (Note Triggered): Send audio into the unit. Next create a track/sequence that is routed to this Gater. Create notes in the sequence. Note pitch is irrelevant. Audio will only pass when a note in ON. You can edit the triggered envelope by clicking the Envelope button. You are not restricted to just on/off the audio. The envelope can be shaped in any way. The envelopes loop can slowed down or speed up (sort of LFO speed) and the envelope can be set velocity sensitive. Inspired by VolumeShaper from Cableguys and it took only 10 min to make this minimal version :)

- 2 Band EQ: A stripped down 4 Band EQ to the two parametric bands.
- High-Low Shelve EQ: Just the two shelve bands from the 4 Band EQ

That's it! Download from here (http://dl.dropbox.com/u/62409608/Effect ... 202012.zip)
Install by copy the patches in the MULAB/User/Effects folder. If you copy the patches in already existing folders, delete the "MuxPatchFileCache.MuData" files in these folders for M4.1 to find the new patches.

Enjoy!

Feedback or change requests are welcome

Congrats on your newest effect pack Andreas!

I like the MultiBand Distortion and the new reverbs!

Personally, this is how i check out a new patch pack:
  • Save & extract the zip on the desktop.
  • Setup a simple session, in this case a imported a drumloop.
  • Drag-drop the first effect in the new pack into the first rack slot.
  • Now i can step forward and back thru the patches and check em out.
I add this info to make clear that you don't have to put the effects in the user library to check em out, they can be anywhere on the HD, and are ready for play :)

Now if i want to permantly store this pack in my user folder, then i move the extracted folder into MuLab/User/Mux/Effects. Because then these patches are always included in the patch lists.

Thanks Jo!

And thanks to you for the wonderful Mulab 4.
I am still amazed what can be achieved with this monster tool!

kick arse dood! these will be very useful for my songs that never get finished hahaha

Nicely done! These are pretty awesome to the point that this app seems to be wide open for development and expansion... I really need to start creating patches and instruments. I've been too busy, but I'm really excited at the endless possibilities for MuLab! Yayy! Thanks to Andreas for all the great work your doing. I've got to get busy...
