I finally got a chance to spend couple hours on Mu-Lab the other day and my first impressions were overall positive. One thing I missed, though I'm not sure it's. already available somewhere, is the ability to start recording on playing first note. I believe Roland terminology is Note Start. If it's. not clear I'll explain a bit further...
When you hit record, the metronome sounds but recording is paused until you play your first note. Then recording starts play automatically.
I also had a couple problems regarding sub tracks and editing in key editor I'll add the details when I can re-check in case its user error.

It's not literally what you asked but note that you can start recording using a MIDI key by creating a shortcut from a MIDI note to the "Start/Stop Recording" function.
