i have a mic in (front jack) and a guitar in (usb) but i can't figure out how to get them assigned to different tracks for recording. they're both coming from audio input 1. i watched the tutorial video. i can add another input module and everything, but the problem is that i can't figure out how to take either the mic or guitar from audio input 1 and assign it to the new module (audio input 2). when i double click on the inputs, what happens in the video doesn't happen to me; i don't get a "select audio inputs" menu, it just says "nothing to edit." this happens for both audio input 1 (the original created with new files, that works if i use to record) and the new one i add.
i'm completely new, so i think i'm just missing something big. i assume this can actually be done with usb and mic simultaneously...no?

I don't think you are. I've personally found the audio recording very confusing in M4 compared to M3.nickalexandre4 wrote:i have a mic in (front jack) and a guitar in (usb) but i can't figure out how to get them assigned to different tracks for recording. they're both coming from audio input 1. i watched the tutorial video. i can add another input module and everything, but the problem is that i can't figure out how to take either the mic or guitar from audio input 1 and assign it to the new module (audio input 2). when i double click on the inputs, what happens in the video doesn't happen to me; i don't get a "select audio inputs" menu, it just says "nothing to edit." this happens for both audio input 1 (the original created with new files, that works if i use to record) and the new one i add.

The inputs you're adding actually map to the hardware inputs. So you don't want to assign input 1 to input 2 - the signal should originate from these modules. It used to be very simple -- like in the video you saw: add an input module, specify an input.
If I'm understanding you right, your problem is that M4 is grouping your two mono inputs into one stereo input (this flummoxed me the other night). If this is the case, all you can do is open up the session mux and hook up your input module to a "stereo splitter" module. This will split your guitar and microphone signals to two outputs, which you can then record to separate tracks.

I'm working on an improvement in the next version.
I'll also remake the Audio Recording tutorial as the M3 version has become outdated.

Glad to hear this. It seems to me that input/output handling has taken a major step backward in M4. I can't think of a single advantage over the old system...mutools wrote:I'm working on an improvement in the next version.
I've now got a bit more time, so I started properly playing around with the new features in M4 -- and really enjoying them -- but once it got to actually recording some audio, it took me ages and a lot of frustration to get it set up - and even once I did it was a kind of hacky, indirect way of doing things (the stereo splitter).

Double post, but to bump it: Nick, try the new 4.1.14 release. The input/output handling is much more intuitive in this update so you won't need any extra steps for using mono inputs (you'll be able to do things as you saw in the video).
