Should be easy...but I am only getting close. Or I should say...closer :D
I'm using Zebra for this..haven't gotten to use Diva much yet but maybe it's more suitable for this?

Anyways, would love to hear you input :)

Diva has no OSC retrigger mode, so imo not the tool to use for bass.

cannot help with programming zebra sorry..even cannot watch the clip due to GEMA restrictions.

We're in a musician's forum. It should be clear to everyone here that not Gema creates those restrictions - it's Google themselves. Google is afraid that they have to pay a cent per view, should they ever finalize negotiations with the composers. 1 cent per view is nothing for a company that makes billions from profiling users, e.g. in their data mining tools sich as YouTube.

Blaming this on the owners of rights they want to exploit is just unbelievaby cheap. Google says that YouTube doesn't make money, but that's just not true. For Google, data equals money. They use free services such as Gmail and YouTube to create the data they use elsewhere to make the money. It's naive to think that Google can't pay for showing copyrighted material because "it's not worth it". It is.

Funny enough, for Google it doesn't even matter if you watch the clip or not. They already added it to your profile no matter if it was blocked or not.

Sorry for the rant, but I can't leave this uncommented.

That NIN song is very catchy, the bass reminds me of Gary Numan's style sound (2003 +), then again these 2 artists have worked together many times.

I bought Zebra last year, and it's the best vst I've ever purchased, I personally think it can replicate many sounds, I love the tutorials on youtube, but would really like to see a video on how to achieve a well known sound.

Today I downloaded VoxengoSPAN, which is a free plugin, for me to analyze the original sound and compare with zebra, while I'm trying to replicate it.
I'm not a sound designer, but love the idea of creating new sounds!

I Cam in pretty close...but it's still not exactly there. I don't know why I'm obsessed with that sound.

Still trying :)

I needed just an evening to "nail" that sound with ACE:

Hmm, not really. Not even close. Had some fun still with the little U-he synth ;)

Thanks! Your comment sparked a brainwave one a mixing/sound design problem Im having in some of my tracks. I had known about the osc retrig being important in particular if your mix/track is built from the bass. (The way around it being to sample a particular note/phrase that has the phase you like.)

I use Tyrell and Diva for some bass stuff in the form of long bass pads, but forgot how that could create probs. I dont think Tyrell has osc retrig either as far as I remember. Osc retrig isnt the same as osc sync right?

Diva is definitely great at bass, but in certain situations the osc retrig is really important. Depends on context, but def in my particular situation it was causing some headaches/unpredictability.

The bass part has always reminded me of bass players in the 70's playing through a Mu-tron,which unfortunately isn't made anymore or easy to obtain.
Players like Alphonso Johnson used this effect quite a bit.
Charlie Clouser & a couple of other NIN alumni participate in an AMAZING thread on GS,you might want to ask him or the others how they played this live or created this originally in the studio.
The thread is currently 15 pages long so they might have actually already discussed this.

yeah, that' pretty much classic Mu-tron territory. You should be able to use envelope shaping. The problem is that the Mu-Tron is sensitive to amplitude. You need a different character and slope for various velocities. Amplitube has a Mu-Tron in the effects.
If you have to ask, you can't afford the answer

"does anybody have an idea how to get a similar bass sound such as the one trent uses on "closer" or "only"?

im using logic, with native instrument plug-ins"

"The original bass sound was made with an oberheim matrix 12.
Just automation on the filter as the notes play back.

Somewhat Damaged (the intro sequence)
Just a simple 1/8th note sequence. Short decay. Just FM it a bit and you should have it.
Almost any two oscillator subtractive synth can do that sound. A little noise should help too." - Taken from here
