Hi guys,

has anyone successfully used the envelope follower as modulator?

I am trying to get the following effect: I have a Celeste, which I want to sound very clean, but in the sustain phase I want the sound to get more and more chorus the quiter it gets. So the result should be a clean inital sound and a chorus enriched tail.

I tried to do this with MMultiBandChorus using the envelope follower as a modulator for wet/dry with inverted response curve. But it is a really really really hard task to get a smooth sound. I can't seem to tweak values that work right. The main problem is to get a smooth increase of chorus as the level of the celeste fades. I tend to get rather sudden changes of the chorus.

Also, with quick note playing the follower sometimes seems to choke, it happens often that I trigger new notes but the follower still seems to be stuck in the release phase.

I would be very interested if anyone who has successfully programed a follower preset modulating anything :-)

Well, I think this is not a way to go. By nature the follower "follows" the input signal, so when it goes down, the follower does too. I'd suggest using "Envelope" mode instead. Whether triggering by audio or MIDI, you can set up the whole ADSR curve there.

The inversion of the parameter tuning was not a problem (though the plugin says that it may eat CPU), rather the tweaking of good low and high values and curve form for the detector.

But thanks for the envelope tip. That should work fine if I match the envelope to that of the celeste. I don't have values though, its just a sample, but it should be possible to tweak it by ear.

Thanks again

Hm I am not successful with the envelope either. The triggering is not how I intend it to be. As long as a triggered envlope hasn't finished no new envelope is triggered.

The follower is the way to go I think, only I have to find good settings :?

Can you send me a sample so I can try myself?

Yes that would be terrific. How can I send you the files?

Ok, so this could do the trick:

The main points are that the dry/wet is inverted (you did that), maximize is enabled, so it strongly lowers the dry/wet when the note starts, and hold is high, so that a big part of the beginning is removed. Let me know what you think.

Thanks very much! So this works in principle. However, I tried it on a slightly different sound, and the chorus came in too quickly. Guess the level values have to be tuned to the input material?

What I don't really understand is where to pin the min and max level values to control where chorus is 100% dry or 100% wet.

I would guess that they can be controlled via the min/max level values of the follower section at the top.

But there is the advanced section below with the "maximized" ceckbox and another level value. What is this used for? It certainly influences the behaviour very much.

Thanks again!

Yes exactly!

All these things are there so you can tune it for specific material. You cannot expect the follower to be able to understand your ideas, that's artificial intelligence! :D

I suggest reading the docs. Generally min/max levels are the levels which make the target values min/max, so basically the range of levels. Maximize is a little specific feature, which controls the behaviour - when the input level is above the threshold, it acts like it is 0dB, when below, it acts like silence. This often provides more aggressive results, which I found useful in your case.

If I were you, I'd setup some settings, and then rather adjust volume of the track before it actually reaches the plugin.

Thanks for putting RTFM so nicely ;)

Will do! :-)

PS: Thanks again for the support!! What other company would bother to program a preset for just one costumer?!?!?
