Today is pick-on-Tracktion-day again :P:

I noticed this some weeks ago for the first time, so I assume it wasn't the same in older versions, but this is just a guess :? :

Take a normalized audio-file, leave the volume slider a 0db, pan hard left or right - DOH :x :-o  :help:

:dog: - I should have renamed this thread a long time ago

Am I the only one having a problem with this? :?

Or is my copy of Tracktion different from yours?

Post

yup, but i guess this is by design and not a bug.
in other sequencers you often have a setting how much a signal is lowered if you center it (cubase sx has it). in tracktion it seems that the signal is lowered by approx 6 db. So if you normalize your mix to 0 db the signal gets attenuated by + 6db if you pan it hard left or right.
ähmmm...

Post

I don't know anything about this Cubase design, but raising the gain while panning is complete and utter amateur bollocks! - Yes, of course Jules might call it a unique feature because unique it is but how am I supposed to achieve a proper mix with this shite? :?

Post

after reading your post again Rudy I' am confused.
I NEVER saw any sequencer doing this - of course I don't have SX, but e.g. Sonar, Samplitude (Magix Audio Studio) and Logic (Magix Midi Studio) and they aren't doing anything like this. A hardware mixing console
and even a hifi-amplifier as well not.

Post

well I think it's strange, too....

but it does make sense in order to keep the "loudness" on the same level...

still I hate turning down the volume whenever I pan hard right or left... I would like it way more if the panning would reduce the volume of the side opposite to the panned side (or however you put it)

cheers

there's never a bad thing in lowering the volume, but raising the volume is a big big problem.
Again - I don't know about SX (but if it is an option it is probably o.k.) but I know no other sequenencer doimg it like this. If I pan left I want it to get more silent on the right - nothing else -
and I allways thought this is common sense. :?

Post

Why does Tracktion allways HAS TO BE so damned different to common sense. :x

Post

As far as I've been aware Tracktion has no panning law. Cubase does, Logic does not (or at least not the last version I used - 5.2). Cubase has the option of no panning law, -3db and -6db. The fact is a sound will be percieved as quieter when panned to one side. A panning law compensates for this, and I find this very useful. But I didn't think that Tracktion included any kind of panning law.

well it depends - if you just want to move the source in the stereo field but want to have the same precieved loudness ...I guess you need to raise the gain a bit on the panned track..

but I really like your version better.... Logic worked this way, too.. and that's one of the small things I liked better about Logic

anyway.... Tracktion has always handled panning this way.... - at least since I'm using it

Just try it Chagzuki

after all - I don't want to discuss this - for me it's just damned plain wrong and it makes mixing more problematic than neccessary - I'm out, finally :x

Post

This type of feature should always be optional/configurable. Jules, where are you?

I take it this is the behaviour of the volume/pan filter. . ? Well, I dunno actually.
What happens if you use something like MDA image instead?

:D - good idea - will try!

Surely the whole point behind tracktion is that you can build your own world.

Just use some other vol/pan plug instead of teh Tracktion one. Problem solved.

Hell, if you can't find one, pm me and I'll knock one together in ten minutes flat...
