Hi Guys/Gals,
Does anybody know if Chainer, or any other stable VST "Sub-host" works on Receptor?
I'm mainly searching about for a way to route MIDI note data through various flavors of MIDI processors before it goes on to the VSTi; About 2 years ago I was told that routing MIDI note data through Receptor channels in this way was going to be a ways in the future...was hoping 2+ years qualified as "a ways in the future"...Thanks, folks,
BillW3

Okay Bill, here's your chance to make an impact on future developments here at muse.BillW3 wrote:Hi Guys/Gals,

What would you like to see in this regard?

Hello Bryan,
Sorry it took me so long to see your open invitation to air my thoughts, and thank you very much for the chance. Well, here goes..:
What I am primarily after with this recurring request is the ability to use MIDI Fx processors in a chain before the VSTi which will actually play the performance from the artist's MIDI controller, be it keyboard, or as you know, MIDI guitar in my case. This would refer to VST plugs that would be acting on the MIDI data stream; primarily note msgs, velocity data, but the list of MIDI processing Fx plugs has blossomed out to a many-splendored thing, and there are new thoughts on ways to use and process CC's, pitch bend msgs, etc, that I see all the time. Speaking for myself, and maybe for the rest of the MIDI guitar world to some extent, as well, there are probably MIDI processors out there now, or cooking up in someone's workspace or imagination, that could greatly ease our tribulations in the "Pitch-To-MIDI" arena, where, as anyone who's tried it even a couple times knows, life is fraught with peril...so to speak. Generally, the kinds of velocity curves and scaling available on most plugs themselves help us out a little, but never go nearly far enough when you're trying to harvest digital pitches out of the noisy analog forest, all in an a timely manner. The various flavors of the MIDI-Guitar interfaces pick up where these leave off, of course, and generally do a very good job--the Fishman TRiple PLay is by far "da baddest of da bunch" to come out so far. Nothing short of amazing, really, Kudos to Anton and the Fishman crew! But when you team this interface up with a box as powerful as the Receptor, I'm not sure if even my own long-range imagination can see how far the road stretches out on what could be done.
And, BTW, yes, Bryan, I've recently begun scouting Trio & Quttro Receptors on ebay, and I know me pretty well, from long experience dealing with me--we actually get along so well I can't even believe it ;=)...that it is probably now just a matter of when, not if, I'll be buying a Quttro...)
Last year I did a show with a great Colorado roadhouse blues guitarist, Steve Crenshaw, who also happens to be one of my best friends; during the show I used Kontakt Sax & Brass, which uses key ranges to input and change chord inversions, close or spread voicings, etc, 'on-the-fly', to hold down a fairly interesting horn section backing, and during his solo, I traded guitar and solo saxophone (LinPlug's SaxLab VSTi) phrases back and forth with Steve...all accompanied by the steady roar of dropping jaws, I might add... <smile>
That said, some MIDI processing available as a 'front end' to the VSTi's would be most helpful..think "constrain to key", MIDI based harmonizers, a MIDI looper/ /arpeggiator, even, possibly, used in tandem, perhaps, with an audio looper on the guitar audio line..? All handled by my new Quttro...?
I'm fairly certain that the ability to chain up MIDI plugs in this way would also open up possibilities for the keyboard-controller crowd as well. MIDI guitarists would of course have many other velocity/sensitivity benefits from an additional layer of control, as I mentioned earlier.
It's kind of always seemed to me that not offering this kind of functionality on a box as ground-breaking, and technological rule-bending leaves a lot of creative possibilities on the table. As I've also often said in my posts, I have no idea of the relative complexity, or the issues and problems involved with expanding the architecture in this way, but I don't think that even myself, who has obviously given this quite a bit of thought, fully realizes the potential directions and expansion of creative limits this might take the Receptor to.
And, at the end of the day, that kind of thinking, is, to a large degree, why I have owned two Receptors, so far, and why I'll be most likely be plunking down $3k again, eventually...because, if you're gonna do it, why mess around with a mere Trio, right? You never know exactly where it is you're gonna butt heads against the ugly spectre of software, or, horror of horrors---HARDWARE limitations, so why not push that potential roadblock as far down the boulevard as possible, right?

PS--- I'm considering starting a Twelve-Step Program for guitarists who don't feel fulfilled unless they program in Hexadecimal...alright, alright, so it'll be a really small group...We're all pretty inner-directed anyway...
Heck, I was once in a band with a drummer who was a retired doctor...!
We've all got our crosses to bear, right?
So, thanks mucho mucho for the opportunity to shout out, Bryan! I'll be looking forward to hearing your thoughts...
