Struggling with the XMF module

Can anyone offer any helpful insights into the XMF module? Yes, I've RTFM, but this thing isn't like any synth filter I've encountered before.

I get that it's a versatile filter with distortion. But I am confused by the "cross-modulation" designation. What does that mean?

And what does the Offset control do, and why is it called "offset"?

Have you watched Howard's excellent mini-tutorial on the XMF?

And Urs' original announcement video?

It's really several filters in one module which is what likely leads to most of the confusion. Offset does different things depending on the filter topology.

I myself am not sure why it's called a cross-modulation filter though. Possibly because you can modulate the cutoff at audio rate with the side-chain input?

Perhaps Urs shouldn't have called it a "cross-modulation" filter - that phrase isn't really synonymous with "audio-rate modulation". However, XMF is snappier name than ARMF ;-)

Here's the relevant quote from TFM about the Offset parameter. It's called Offset because it _offsets_ the two cutoff frequencies away from the nominal value:

"Offset
Splits the cutoff values of the two channels, in semitones ( +/-48 ). Modulatable, great for panning effects with the standard single routing, or for multiple resonances in serial, parallel or diff'ed mode (see Routing on the previous page)."

Thanks guys.
