External MIDI directly to a rack?

Is there a way to just play instruments in the rack from an external MIDI keyboard without requiring a session?
I'd like to use the Rack to host VSTs for real-time live performance.

"Without using a session"? Why?
No, a session is always the basis.
But what you can do is create session using N racks each holding the sound you want to play.
Then you can click the racks to select a sound.
Or you can assign each MIDI channel to a different sound (so max 16). To do so use the Session menu -> Edit MIDI Input Targets.
Hope this helps.

Because what I need is a VST host for live performance ---- I'll never have a session (i.e. tracks and so forth). I bought MuLab UL hoping I could do this directly.

The collection of tracks and parts is called a composition, its editor the composer. See http://www.mutools.com/info/docs/mulab/overview.html
Ok i understand you don't need the composer. What you could do is switch the rack desk to windowed mode so it comes in its own window. Then minimize the main session window i.e. the one with the transport panel and composer etc.
Does that work for you?

Well, I'd still have to configure the session stuff.
It would be really nice if you had a mechanism so that a MIDI input (port+channel) could be assigned directly to a RACK input --- that would make your system incredibly useful for live performance, specially if it supported the ability to change the loaded patch via MIDI command

You mean setting up your sounds? Isn't that logical? I guess i'm missing your point.dhjdhj wrote:Well, I'd still have to configure the session stuff.
That possible: See SESSION menu -> Edit MIDI Input Targets. It would be really nice if you had a mechanism so that a MIDI input (port+channel) could be assigned directly to a RACK input --- that would make your system incredibly useful for live performance

Ah --- Edit MIDI Input Targets --- that's a start --- however, there doesn't seem to be a way to set the port even if there's more than one MIDI input port defined.
But this does begin to give me what I'm looking for.
Thank you

Currently all MIDI input ports are internally merged into 1 port, so it's about 16 channels.dhjdhj wrote:Ah --- Edit MIDI Input Targets --- that's a start --- however, there doesn't seem to be a way to set the port even if there's more than one MIDI input port defined.
You're welcome. If you have any further questions, just ask.But this does begin to give me what I'm looking for. Thank you

I've found myself into the same problem, but with the edit midi input targets thing gets easier.dhjdhj wrote:Well, I'd still have to configure the session stuff.

Would be good to allow more ports if possible, at some point.mutools wrote:Currently all MIDI input ports are internally merged into 1 port, so it's about 16 channels.dhjdhj wrote:Ah --- Edit MIDI Input Targets --- that's a start --- however, there doesn't seem to be a way to set the port even if there's more than one MIDI input port defined.
