Hey Jo,

So I'm putting this here on the forum so that the other members can pitch in their opinions about your website. That way you get more happy users :)

I noticed that you have your flash players set to a fixed size. Because of this your sidebar is EXTREMELY wide. My recommendation is that in your object tags make the width set to a dynamic percent that feels comfortable to use. Then have your sidebar set to a fixed width (such as 300px). Then make the players under the 100% made with Mulab, have their container set to a dynamic width so that they still stay a larger width than the sidebar, but fit on the screen at the same time. Right now I have to side scroll on the main page with I find very annoying. Anyway, this is just a suggestion. I welcome other users to throw in their ideas/opinions about the Mutools site as well.

Hope I've given some good ideas,

Dakkra

Edit:
P.S:

I also recommend you switch from flash player to HTML5. Performs a lot better on most systems now.

Im kind of thinking that a very small development team with a lot of work to do are better focussing on their product than tweaking their website. Know what I mean?

I generally agree. However, presentation can make the difference between a sale and a pass-by.

Thanks for your feedback Dakkra!

Better now? (You might have to really 'refresh' your browser)

My primary comment would be that the propagation of new windows / tabs as you work through the site quickly becomes annoying. Click for MuTools docs, you get a new tab. Click a topic in there you get a new tab. Since there's no back in that tab, if you click for the TOC at the bottom of the page, you now have two tabs with the TOC. And so on. Personally I'd prefer it all stay in on tab/window and let me navigate backwards and forwards. I can always force a new tab if I want one.

The fact that the docs open in a separate tab is ok i think because the docs are separate from the website. The only question is: Is it ok that clicking on links in the doc TOC also open separate pages. I think yes because it's good that the TOC stay easily accessible. Imagine the TOC click would simply open in the same window and you surf from link to link in the docs and want to return to the TOC, that would take you many 'backs' to return to the TOC. (not everyone knows there is a TOC link at the bottom). And the price for an eventual extra TOC (cfr the scenario you described) is only that you have to close an extra page. There is no perfect solution that fits all, i think, and once you know it's ok as it is.

Post

There are ways around it but you need cross-page scripting. Clicking "TOC" could check to see if there was one open and, if so, switch to it, else open a new one.

Another solution, though is probably out of the question due to requiring too much additional work/time, would be to have the TOC always visible on the left hand side of the page in a seperate column.

I do also dislike the constant Tabs being opened on every click of a link. It makes navigation awkward. And as there's a TOC link on every page it's not difficult to get back there. Perhaps add this link to the Top of each page too?

Like I said this is probably a lot of work, so I understand if this is refused. But it would make the whole process easier. When I've tried to locate a certain problem, I'm constantly opening and closing tabs.

If I knew how to do it, I'd be more than happy to help, but my knowledge of HTML code is limited.

Maybe there's a better way for both users and Jo?

If required I wouldn't mind helping write HTML and CSS for the site. I do have some practice ( http://www.beta.dakkra.com ). It's actually kinda fun to make a webpage. I don't have much practice in Java Script though. If you want assistance with your website Jo I'd be happy to help! Mulab is my absolute favorite DAW right now so I wouldn't mind helping it out a bit.

Thanks for your proposal Dakkra, i'll certainly will keep that in mind. In some near future i want to discuss the mutools.com site with a web developer i know and i'll see what comes out of that talk. Meanwhile feel free to post suggestions about how to make mutools.com more attractive and easy to use. Note that i do want to keep it a relative simple and easy website.

I understood that you guys don't seem to like the 'open in new window' aspect when clicking in the doc TOC. I've no prob removing that aspect. Anyone disagrees? (i.e. has reasons to keep that aspect?)

Post

Ok, updated the docs: removed the 'open in new window' aspect in the TOC.

By the way: Each doc page can return to the TOC via a click on "M5 Docs" at the top of the page or on "Table Of Contents" at the bottom of the page.

Yay! Thanks Jo, much better ;-)
