Post

Ok folks, so here we are with the first style almost being finished. Please like the image with the font(s) you like. The number of likes will be the judge ;). Please feel free to comment, e.g. what would you change for example, ideas are always welcome.

Note that this style shall be "futuristic", there will be others "realistic" looking etc. And note you will be able to change colors (in much better way than before), and of course knobs & buttons will be available too.

Whoa.

I'd say the fonts are your smallest problem there ;-)

The main thing hurting my eyes are all those high contrast frames that serve hardly any purpose.
You could easily lose all the frames around sliders and just make the background a slightly different colour to show the beds.
Many of the other frames don't feel necessary as well.
In a way you create a lot of confusion by over-compartmentalization.

I am unable to grok right away what is the important part of the GUI and what are the not so important ones.
Everything looks the same, everything grabs for attention.

Somehow I get a Windows 3.1 feeling with too many windows open ;-)
The colours don't help it either.

Cheers,

Tom

Hi Tom, thanks for the feedback.

The thing is, the "frames" are actually very very important, because they tighten the components, that are related to each other. The plugins are deep as you know, so there are usually way more things to control, than what you are used to. If there would be no frames, there would just be a thousand controls...

I intentionally chose the chorus, because it has especially many controls. The frames could be smaller of course, but from what I tried, it didn't look very good and especially not "easy to understand".

Anyway there will be other styles, all of them different, so I'm pretty sure there will be something for you.
And the colors are customisable, so it can look very very different ;).

Vojtech is only asking about the fonts in this thread, the other aspects of the style can be tackled later.

As I am not on FB, I'm going to put my likes here:
  • #3 seems best to me -
#1 the letters are too close together and fairly narrow
#2 is too big and too square ("digital")
#4 is too big, has lost its descenders and the upper-case characters are only a little taller than the lower-case characters.
However, the biggest problem for me is the aliasing. I found myself squinting at the images to try and get the text sharp and in focus. When I zoomed in on each I could see the problem - maybe it's FB rendering the images into a lower quality?

Thanks!
It probably is the FB text, I don't see any problem here. Though it depends on the particular font. Most people are voting for the font #3 (I think), and I agree, because it is the easiest to read.

What Tom said :)

It looks like you're essentially going for a mono/duocromatic design based on the colours I'm seeing but, like Tom said, you're dividers/frames are too strong.

One tip for designs like this is to pick your main base colour (that light blue) and then switch to HSB and tweak the saturation and brightness ever-so-slightly to create variations on the same main colour that you can use to paint your frame backgrounds and borders etc.

I'm afraid it's still too early to worry about fonts.

And by the looks of it, you are only playing w/ font size and weights as opposed to actual different font types.

On the subject of fonts -- if you really are going for "90's Flash/Tech" look -- then you could go and use retro/bitmap fonts which should solidify that look.

Something like this:

... and make sure you don't alias!

And finally, the accent colour -- that burgundy red -- isn't working for me, it's too dark/rich...

An orange, yellow, something brighter would serve you better.

For that you can visit:

And plugin your base/blue color and find palettes that have nice complimentary colours you could use for your accents etc.

Happy Sundays to you!

Little visualisation of what is meant here (agree to it, of course). Note that only the "Band-section" has been changed, i.e. the borders are gone. The upper part incl. the parameter "boxes" are unchanged... to much work for a quick demo:

Flat:

Minimal shadows on bottom of the sections and the headlines (1px in darker tone):

Conclusion: Borderless design is possible... ;)

P.S. Also aligned the parameters to the bottom boxes. "Dry/wet" and the like are now in line with the lower content. Same on the right hand side.

Aaaah, ok, will try ;). Personally I like the borders, but this shouldn't be a problem.

Either #1 or #3, because readability is most important...

And other colors, please, because this azure and this burgundy are biting each other... :o

Any colors ;). Make it black and white if you wish ;)

Ok, did the left part of the param-boxes, too. It's still distracting because they're to close to each other...

OTH I don't mind the (sort of) "scientific excel-sheet look", too. I'm happy with the design at is was, besides some minor adjustments suitable for my weak eyes. Just grabbed the suggestions. ;)

Btw, I think these edits would have been possible with the early Gui-editor, no? I would have dived into it much more but you stopped us due to a new version. :x

One should still add some minor, almost invisible decoration... thus improving the flatness look (saying that I don't agree to the FB comment that recommends Valhalla's flat-style).
