trying to mixdown 4 bar loop of drums that have sub tracks;bass drum on 1st track, snare and hats on two subtracks. how is this done? i tried soloing track and 2 subtracks so that other tracks do not get mixed down in the loop i want to create, but it doesn't work.

what is the best way to do this in mulab?

Post

What you do is correct.
Mixdown is 'you get what you hear'. You can mute unwanted sequences, mute unwanted tracks or solo wanted tracks. All these possibilities work here.

aye, worked it out. it was late and i expected it to bounce down audio between the locators and wondered why i wasn't getting what i expected!

jo, i reckon it would be really useful to have the 'From Position' to 'To Position' automatically go to locator start and end point if loop is on. it's a way of visualising what you want bounced down to audio by the combination of part selection and the span of the locators.

+1

I often use the loop locators for optimizing a part of a song. After that I mixdown the whole song.

I know I'm insisting now but I don't think the "loop" locators are an adequate medium for visiualizing the mixdown range. For me seperate (optional) locators would be really fine. Did I told that already? ;-)

That's what Mulab does!
And to comment Reincke: I find it easy to set the loop locators before mixdown. Alternative you still can double click on the From and To positions and enter manualy

No, it doesn't. as far as i can tell, the to and from positions markers get stuck at the first positions they are at when you click on 'mixdown audio'. try moving the loop locators for the next 'mixdown audio' and the to and from position markers don't move and you have to set them up manually. they should move with the locators if you decide to change the length of the loop.

To tell the truth I think there is no real correlation between looping and mixdown except the necessity to indicate the position for a mixdown. Everytime I do a mixdown it's an unnecessary step to set the loop locators at the mixdown positions and back to the loop afterwards. (Setting them manually is just more horrible).
Meanwhile mixdown positions are persisted in the session file (Thanks Jo!), which is a great step ahead.

Previously it was like that: the mixdown from-to auto followed the loop. But user feedback made clear that this wasn't appreciated. That was discussed here on Kvr. So now the from-to are simply set manually. That's since M5.1.5 - 26 Apr 2013, as a consequence of that discussion here.

that being the case, is there an easier way to make loops of specific parts? the ability to select a sequenced part and turn it into audio loop by a key command would be useful and mibbe at some point even taking it further and extending this to become a 'freeze' function in mulab.

i need to create audio loops for import into ableton for live use and the easier it is the better.

In the next version the Mixdown Audio dialog includes a button to quickly set the From-To to the composition loop.

ok. thank you. that's great. i'm working on a live set up that might interest you btw. i'm using a netbook running midi guitar software (midi controller) linked to a laptop running ableton for loops and also reason and mux within ableton for synth sounds triggered from my guitar linked via wireless midi rtpmidi software.

an android tablet running livkontrol (via lkbridge sofware) triggers ableton loops, with it all connected up using my mobile phone as a wifi network! it works well with low latency. also got another laptop and a novation synth running mulab for additional synth sounds using either usb midi or wifi. the wifi option seems to be stable and a better option than connecting stuff together using traditional midi cables and is the only way to use android tablets cos usb is pretty hopeless on my android tablet.
