Hi... How do I select a specific instrument in Reason. I loaded up a Rewire / Reason track, but I can't see the instruments in Mulab... ei my different Combinators etc...

For instance if I'm using Cubase I can directly connect to Maelstrom for instance and play it. I'm having trouble finding where to see the instruments while in Mulab.

Thanks!!

The rewire devices are available via choosing the MIDI channel for the track/part. You might have to scroll down in the channel list to see the actual device names you're looking for. Does this info help?

Sorry... I hadn't checked this post in a while. Thank you for the reply.

Had another question... think you may have already answered it before but just wanted to check.

In the future... will Mux be able to host rewire devices like Reason etc.
I know that Plogue Bidule is able to do that.. I thought that I saw somewhere you could do that with Mux, but I'm not sure if that was my imagination or not.

I was surprised that it was possible until I saw it.

Thanks

I have rewired Reason Essential 8 in Mulab 6 (demo), and loaded some synths in the Reason rack, but I am not able to choose the synth I want on my track in Mulab, because I only have Midi chanel numbers but no names...

Post

Did you insert Reason E8 in a rack? If yes then try this: Drag-drop the Reason E8 rack slot onto the track, or on the [+] track to create a new track. Thing is to connect the track directly to Reason E8 itself and not to the rack containing Reason E8. Then choose a MIDI channel for that track. You should see "Bus x, Channel y" for all generic channels and effective ReWire channel names for the ones Reason E8 provides a channel name. Does it work fine on your system?

Post

Yes, you're right, I came to the same conclusion that I must adress directly the Rewire device to see the channel's names. It's just that I wanted to put an arpeggiator before the Reason device, so I had to put it in a rack... Maybe there must be some kind of option to choose the Rewire channel by right clicking the Reason device ?

I understand.

No not by right-clicking the device, cause how could that be different for different tracks then?
But here is a trick: Choose the channel while the ReWired device is targetted directly, then drag-drop the rack on that track so that the track plays that rack. The track's MIDI channel won't change, though it will be listed as a more generic value. For example if the ReWired device channel is bus 90, channel 5, then the more generic MIDI channel will be 1429 <=> ((90-1) * 16) + 5. Anyway, you can rename the track so it uses a relevant name and once the MIDI channel is set, it's ok. I've taken note about this case and will see if i can smooth it in some future version.

Ok, thank you for the trick.
I have made some tests with Reason 8 rewired into Mulab and it's great but I have noticed these strange behaviours :
- if I have a track in Mulab linked to a Reason audio track, it is always played, even if I mute that track in Mulab, I have to mute it in Reason.
- on the contrary, if I have a track in Mulab linked to a reason instrument track, I can mute it from Mulab, but if I unmute it in Mulab, it will play even if I mute it in Reason.

As far as i know ReWire does not exchange track specific information. When you're sending events from a MU track to Reason, these events go directly to the Reason instrument and it has nothing to do with a Reason track to that same instrument.

Post

OK, so there are no exchange of mute/solo operations. But I suppose that Mulab in able to cut the audio from Reason if I solo an track linked to a audio track in Reason (my first point)...

No, that's not supported by ReWire, afaik.

Post

OK, and I understand now why I can't mute the audio track in Reason.
When I mute a track in Mulab that is linked to a instrument track in Reason, Mulab stops sending midi data to the Reason midi channel, so the instrument in Reason don't generate audio anymore.
But when I mute a track in Mulab that is linked to an audiotrack in Reason loaded with some audio, Mulab stops sending midi data to the Reason midi channel but this has no effect because Reason still play the audio file as it's not depending on any midi input.
The problem in Mulab is that you can choose the midi channel of the rewired application, but not the audio channels where the rewired application sends it's audio back to Mulab.

In Tracktion for instance, when you insert an Rewire device, you don't choose only a Rewired application, but also a midi channel and an audio channel, so you can add as many Rewire device as you wan't for the same rewired application.

Don't know if there is a way in Mulab to catch the track's solo/mute events, to activate a reversed "note gater" module...

Yes you can have full control over the audio outs of a ReWired device: Best is then to put the ReWired device in the project modular area, there you'll see all audio outputs for the ReWired device, then you can hookup as many racks to those outs as you want and thus manage the ReWired device setup in detail.

Oh I'm so stupid, it's like for a multi-out VSTi...
Thanks !

Yes, exactly.
