Hi, haven't been 'round much this year.. been working mainly on guitar and photography stuff .. i have a bit of time over christmas tho and reckon i might get back into a bit of music production.. Just wondering if i've missed any good vst instruments that have been released ? Recommendations?

Check the Obxd thread here, De la mancha has been setting stuff free, freeware has seemed pretty skim lately, but I'm always looking.

The only instrument I can think of that's definitely from the last year is Tone2's Firebird, an older plug-in that was recently released as freeware. On the superb cheapware front (albeit effects), there's Klanghelm's DC8C 2 and SDRR at 20/22 euros a pop. IMO up there with the very best compressors and saturators at any price point.

Get an electronic copy of the Feb 2013 CM 124 plugins issue. Lots of stuff in there to keep you busy.

Ah yeah, CM have really been knocking it out of the park with their exclusive plug-ins recently. The single voice version of Aalto and their version of Curve 2 (missing only a few modulation sources IIRC) spring to mind.

Not to mention Dune CM and Synthmaster CM.

I think there have been a couple HG Fortune synths released for free this year.

RAGNAROK is comming ;)
CrimsonWarlock aka TechnoGremlin, using Reaper and a fine selection of freeware plugins.

B. Serrano Dionysios, fine and deep hybrid synth:

Vesta from the same guy, is a usable fx filter:

Another favorite of late has been the Argentinian dev Solcito Musica, the Supertron is a killer for old school sequencer lines: http://solcitomusica.blogspot.com.ar/p/virtuales.html

I like Solcito Musica's SuperSonico synth, but it is only semi-free, i.e. if you use the stand-alone version. The VST is dirt-cheap, though, and I guess they really deserve those 8 dollars.
The stand-alone version has the advantage that you can double the size of the interface, which is appealing by the way, very hardware-like. On the other hand there is only so much you can do with a stand-alone version...
The unusual harmonics sliders and double filter section make it sound quite flexible for a simple VA synth with only 3 waveforms.
And it has pretty fast attacks thanks to the exponential option.

My favorite freebies at this time have been Firebird; Alionoctis; STS-26&33; Alphatron. For past synths, my favorites are the GTG-JP..&K1; FullBucket Scroo.

But head over to HG Fortune and go to their NFG page. Plenty to keep you busy right there alone.

Digits is ace if you like chompy PD sounds.

Dirty Harry became freeware about a month ago from de la Mancha.

Nice gritty sounds with an arp and lo-fi sounds.

Not released yet, but Sonigen Modular is worth mentioning as a free beta.

I've gotten a surprising amount of use out of the HG Fortune synths, even though they're theoretically not my kind of thing at all. So, definitely check those out.
