Satin Groups

Hello, I'm new to KVR so bear with me if I get something wrong. I've recently purchased u-he's Satin. Great plug-in, but I'm struggling with the Group function. I have several instances of Satin spread across a multi-tracked drum kit. I understand how the grouping works, but I'm wondering if there is a way to bypass all the instances of Satin at once so I can A/B the overall effect of all the plugins vs none of them. If I turn them off one at a time, I've forgotten what it sounds like by the time they are all off or all on.

So, in short, can I turn multiple instances of Satin off at once? Can't see how to do it.

I'm just guessing here, as I haven't used Satin much, and I am just using CubaseLE4; though in my Cubase, I can route the outputs of multiple tracks to go through a single Group track, and I can use an effect such as delay on the Group track that will affect all of the tracks that are going through that one Group track. You might mention what DAW you are using.

Ah, but the OP wants to use Satin to emulate multitrack tape. Requires several instances.

BTW Not sure (I'm no Satin expert), but doesn't Satin's own bypass button get grouped as well, to turn all instances in the group on/off together?

Howard is right. What I'm trying to do is bypass all instances of Satin in one go, when each instance of Satin is on a separate track.

Hi Howard - that's exactly what I want to do but can't seem to find a way to make Satin do it.

I can use a single instance of Satin to change settings in other instances of Satin by using the group buttons, but only one at a time.

What I can't seem to do is bypass every instance of Satin with one click - which would be useful to A/B the effect of several instances of Satin on a multi-tracked drum part. By the time I've gone through and bypassed all 8 groups, I can't remember what the track sounded like with Satin or without it. Hope that makes sense.

I'm using Logic Pro X by the way.

I probably can't offer any advice, though do you have different Satin settings on different tracks? I guess I don't know why you couldn't put a single Satin setting on multiple tracks (going through a group track), but maybe you don't want that anyway.

Hi Aaron - yes, different settings on different tracks. But even with a single Satin setting, they still need to be separate instances of Satin in order to achieve a multi-tracked effect - otherwise I'm just bussing it. But thanks.

Just curious if you like the "tape hiss", doesn't that mean lots of "tape hiss"?

I'm pretty new to Satin, so I haven't quite figured it out yet, but you can turn it down I think.

Yeah, I remember reading you can turn off the tape hiss if you wish, but I have not tried it.........I stand corrected by Urs below.

You can auto-mute tape hiss and aperity since Version 1.1 - that doesn't completely remove tape hiss, it just removes it when there is silence.

I went looking in Logic to see if there was a way you could select several channel strips to turn off several effects at the same time. Alack, I found nothing.

The quickest way to bypass a bunch would be to pop open the mixer, pause playback, hold option and click each instance to shut it off, and then resume playback.

When you assign multiple Satin instances to one group, this also includes the bypass button of the plugin (unless you detach it from the grouping via right click + lock). This way, a click on either instance's bypass also bypasses the other members of this group. Ne need for external fiddling.

Thanks everyone for your advice. Now worked out that I can bypass a group in one go. I still think it would be useful (to me at least) to be able to bypass all instances of Satin, grouped or otherwise, so I could A/B what effect the tape sim was having across the entire mix, given that I'll have different groups running. Maybe in an update?

I'm not sure. Perhaps a valid point. But since the plugin knows nothing about the exterior arrangement, putting a bypass button into 'global' mode might lead to strange or unintended effects.
Guess it's not that complicated to implement. We could add it to the context menu of the bypass button. But before making a relatively easy thing too sophisticated we'll have to think about it more first.
