MRhythmizer - a really awesome and powerful tool, yet sometimes a little hard to operate, especially the Time functionality.

The first derivative of the playback head vs. time graph, i.e. the local slope, gives the current playback speed. The second derivative, i.e. the curvature, shows whether we are accelerating or decelerating playback. Once you draw some spline lines, it is really hard to tell where you are accelerating or decelerating playback, or whether playback is slower or faster than normal at some point.

For me it would be important to be able to read the local angle of the line, and also the curvature. Maybe this information could be displayed by the coloring of the line. Since you can only display one color, you would have to make a switch for displaying local slope or local curvature.

Vojtech, do you think this is realistic? Of course I am just hypothesizing here, so I cannot know if that would really be a big benefit for desinging new curves more intuitively. But I guess so. As it is now, it is really difficult to come up with new curves, I feel like being in the dark a bit.

Maybe I am lucky and it is quickly realized because you already have everything you need in place. :-)

Well, I'm afraid that would be pretty hard. I also don't think it would be that useful. Right now it is actually pretty simple - in most cases you need horizontal lines, because these are the only ones played in normal speed, so for "patterns" or "repeats" this is the most useful. Whenever a line is not horizontal some form of tempo change occurs, when up it is getting faster and vice versa. Whenever a line is changing shape, then some form of scratching occurs, and usually this is hard to predict, so one needs to play with it anyway :).

Obviously it's not needed for straight horizontal lines ;-)

It would be especially useful to design scratching and tapestop/restart patterns. If you draw a curved line that has a steep slope (>>45°) in the beginning and then turns all the way into a very flat slope (~0°) - so the whole thing is an arc - then you actually have a slowdown and a speedup phase. The point where the playback comes to rest is the point where the line has an angle of 45 degrees. Currently you can only guess where that point is. It would be very useful if you could see where this angle is reached, to place the actual "stop" on a beat.

So, if the coloring by angle is too complex, maybe an additional marker for the 45 degree point in a spline curve is possible?

This is all kind of problematic. Anyway why is it so complicated for you? I mean there is a really nice grid, so all you need is to have the some number of grid lines horizontally and vertically. All if it is no easy enough, you can just resize the whole plugin so that at the end the 45 degrees will be really 45 degrees, right? ;)
