When I invoke multicore in Diva, more often than not it sends Logic's CPU meter into the red and stays there, and the sound craps out, which is the opposite of what I expect. I'm using Logic 9 on an iMac (2011) with Mountain Lion.
Does this happen to anyone else?

My Mac has a 2.5GHz quad-core Intel Core i5 with 6MB on-chip shared L3 cache, 12 gigs RAM. It's always been intermittent - sometimes it works as it should and the CPU meter in Logic drops, but probably 60 -70% of the time I have the problem. My sense is that it's gotten worse recently, but I cannot provide a real analysis to support that. If it would help I can do some informal testing later on today to see if there is any logic to the problem -- i.e. certain oscillators or filters and let you know if I see a pattern.

I notice that with Cubase LE4 and OSX10.6.8, if my song is using lots of CPU, turn off the computer if you have used the internet lately (since you re-booted last), or any other non-DAW software, then turn on the computer again, run only the DAW (Logic in your case), and whatever associated software that runs within Logic.

if these old computers also have old operating systems or even the original one, it may be time for a fresh install anyway. Certain problems may go away as if they never existed.

I get spikes from multi-core usage as well.

It's happened since the first rev with multi-core support included with Diva.
I occasionally turn it on to check it, and it still does it.
Maybe coreduo2 chip isn't optimal for multicore support though.
I will be upgrading to macos 10.7 soon though. 4 more gb ram as well. Hopefully that might change this issue.

@mcnoone: I think that CPU is one or two generations too old to profit from Diva's "multicore" option. 6-year-old machine? I don't think updating the OS is going to help (but I would be happy to be proven wrong!)

There is just occasional popping with an associated spike in cpu for a fast second.
That's about it.
So the mc feature does work on this 2010 mbp.
Just occasional spikes. At times they don't happen at all for 10 or 15 minutes, then a few short spikes within 3 minutes, then repeat. That kind of thing.

a quick remedy is of course to set the latency of your card up to 512 or so. Still acceptable for real-time playing. If that doesn't help, well, it's time to get a new CPU, I'm afraid to say.
My i5 CPU can handle Diva with polyphony, I just don't use the stacks feature. The same with my i7 laptop. I don't feel the need to stack voices, so I'm happy with my current CPU's.
I think I'll get a more powerful CPU this year, there are other tasks that demand it, but as long as Diva runs fine there's no hurry.

The buffer setting makes a huge difference. I will typically change the setting depending on what I'm recording, and of course, when I use a lower buffer for less latency the multi-core issue is much greater. When I'm recording live instruments like guitar I go down to 32 or 64. For soft synth recording I try to stay at 128. I Since starting this thread, I've tried to work with higher buffer 256 or 512 and the problem has diminished significantly.
