How does Tracktion 5 compare to Reaper 4 ?

Hi,
Both Reaper 4 and Tracktion 5 are priced pretty much equal. Reaper 4 at $60., Tracktion 5 at $59.99.
Both have a small footprint, and very popular.
As far as ease of use/learning curve, work flow, efficiency, features, ...etc. How does Tracktion compare to Reaper. and what would make one choose Tracktion 5 over Reaper 4, or Vice-Versa ?
Any feedback, or your thoughts on this would be interesting.

Mulab fits that price scale too I think. Reaper was way too clunky for me, but that's me. If you like the interface and such, then go for it!
They all have very usable demos, too so you don't have to take our word for it.

I have Both , but was a Tracktion 1 2 3 user before Reaper .. Tracktion 4 was buggy , but Tracktion 5 is a Solid release , I prefer it to Reaper because its simple to use drag and drop , less mouse clicking , less menus , less screen mess. Now Reaper is even more Solid than Tracktion it has a plugin bridge so you can use both 32 or 64 VST plugins , its light and very very stable and also has descent effects the Reaplugins and its sampler Reasamplomatic5000 . I don't thin you could go wrong with either VST Host . Demo Demo Demo

Reaper is undoubtedly more powerful and a lot more stable at the moment. But I loved Traction first and now it is back it's my goto host. I just love its workflow, its innovation and the brilliance of its design. I also love its minimalism, now that I have created a skin I am comfortable with it's a thing of beauty, I love how you can totally strip out everything from the interface apart from what you need to work on.

I own both, but Reaper is my goto choice by far. Tracktion does however have some things that I would love in Reaper like the rack filter/modular routing, step sequence clips and Linux version. Some of the quirks of Tracktion drive me up the wall, like the use of "1/2 beat" instead of 1/8th note (what is up with that?), no vertical mixing setup, no ghost clips and the midi editing.
They are both good DAW's so try both , as well as Mulab if you are more Midi based...M6 should be out any day now.

Tracktion is massively out of date, not even worth comparing to any other modern product, it exists entirely on it's workflow, if that workflow is for you then you may want to use it.
I used to love the workflow but Reaper is just so much faster for me now.

There is an element of truth here but to say it's 'massively out of date' is harshTracktion is massively out of date, not even worth comparing to any other modern product, it exists entirely on it's workflow, if that workflow is for you then you may want to use it.

Hmmm every time I try this (again) I think it's either brilliant or awful. Most of the stuff I do (midi) doesn't work very well, so I just let it go at that. But I keep trying... Ha!

It's not supposed to have a mixer (thankfully). It was way ahead of its time - everyone else has been playing catch up with Traktion for years so it's Ok that some have passed it in some areas, but it's still pretty cutting edge.scintillator wrote:Not at all. No mixer, basic MIDI, basic everything, looks like a toy. Only good for simple recording and editing of audio tracks. Reaper, great as it currently is, will be sky high in a couple of years. Jules is a great programmer but will have to spill tons of sweat if he wants Tracktion to catch up with the best.luxgud wrote:There is an element of truth here but to say it's 'massively out of date' is harshTracktion is massively out of date, not even worth comparing to any other modern product, it exists entirely on it's workflow, if that workflow is for you then you may want to use it.

I can identify with this sentiment. I actually updated to T5 on the promise I might get ARA with Melodyne EssentialHmmm every time I try this (again) I think it's either brilliant or awful. Most of the stuff I do (midi) doesn't work very well, so I just let it go at that. But I keep trying... Ha!

Could you please elaborate on what exactly is 'cutting edge' about tracktion? Perhaps what you mean by 'cutting edge' as well?aMUSEd wrote:It's not supposed to have a mixer (thankfully). Primarily the modeless, non skeuomorphic, design philosophy that doesn't overload the user with too many cognitive and perceptual demands at once, combined with the clean vector based interface. Some of the other innovations like freeze and inline midi most other hosts have now too, some have their own takes on those, but the minimalism and modelessness of Tracktion is still pretty unique in DAWs. Reminds me of Valhalla plugins which I also love for their design.
