When you have something that resonates - e.g. a drum (but any surface or space) - damping is what you do to make it resonate less.

And in case of a reverb it means the absorption of high frequencies by the room (surface) so it means that high frequencies will fade away faster than lower ones. Best is to listen to the reverb effect yourself, comparing a zero and a max damp setting.
