Want to record multitrack from Receptor 3io

Hello,

I would like to record to my DAW all 16 tracks from mix mode of my Receptor Trio. The way Muse told me to do this was to buy an additional interface that has optical in so that the bundled (with Trio purchase) Presonus 1818 could send multitrack audio. The 1818 has one optical out which will send 8 channels of audio to my computer's DAW. I have 14-16 channels in use and need to make the purchase of the separate interface.

First, are there any suggestions for interfaces (keeping in mind that I just spent thousands on a R3io and would prefer not to spend gobs of money on something that I thought was already covered)? And second, will an interface read 16 channels (8 audio, 8 digital (MIDI)) if the Presonus can only kick out eight?

OH! I just read the product endorsement from Herbie Hancock where he states, "I love the single Ethernet cable and Muse's "UniWire" technology that allows all the bi-directional MIDI and audio data to communicate easily and quickly between my Receptor and my Mac." I would like to have this available to me. Can I have this?

Is this a thing? Did I somehow miss that I needed to install this on my Mac in order to use the Uniwire in my DAW?

So a few things! Before you buy another interface please note that your Receptor is specifically designed to interface with the Presonus 1818. A new interface will not work as the software will not recognize a different interface. You would need an interface for your computer to receive the audio and record in to your DAW.

Uniwire will do what you want but the catch is that it is 32bit only (sorry Logic X users). Uniwire is included with the Muse/Receptor Tools which you can find on museresearch.com. Uniwire only functions in Mix Mode. Uniwire functions like a software plugin. It sends MIDI data to the plugins on the Receptor and receives the audio back in.

If you don't mind me asking, is it necessary to record all 14-16 channels at once?

Great to hear from you, Nick! To clarify, the added computer interface was suggested by Receptor support to be a link between the Ps1818 optical out and the computer's DAW. They said It was the only way to get multi channels to a computer DAW.
The reason I need so many separate tracks is that I play guitar, cajon, two overhead mics, and VSTi through Receptor and then through my Boss RC-300 three channel looper. (I am aware of the GLoop and it is not useable as I, sometimes, need to send MIDI clock info to my bandmate and her personal looper and I was told there is no way to send any MIDI from the Receptor). After I build a loop I generally solo over it with any of the instruments. My work is accompanist for dance where I improvise for three hours a day, five days a week and I need the ability to invent new sounds within a minute and (what I've not been able to do so far is) capture them for working on later to create compositions for performances or for marketing.

Thank you for addressing the Uniwire issue. I do work in 32-bit as there are a few things that don't work as 64-bit in Mixer Mode. I loaded Muse Tools from the CD that came with my Receptor and even found the VST plugins available in my Presonus Studio One DAW that also came with the Receptor. When I instantiated it in a track the audio would stop. I believe signal was getting into the Uniwire GUI but did not come out. Receptor support said it was a Presonus issue and Presonus suggested I upgrade Studio One as the version I had did not allow 3rd party plugins. I now have the Producer version which does allow other plugins only now I do not see Uniwire in my list of plugins in my S1 DAW. I looked at the Settings tab in the Muse Tools Mixer GUI and do not see a box marked "Enable Uniwire" as the instructions say. I do have the "Enable Receptor Audio+MIDI I/O" and the other one inside the Uniwire settings box.

Thanks for an awesome device and thanks for taking the time to answer this.

I can't offer much help in the ways of Presonus's DAW as it is a product I have not used myself. The included CD is simply a demo they likely put in with the 1818 interface that comes bundled with Trio's. You can always check www.museresearch.com for Muse Tools updates to see if the version you have is the latest.

Uniwire will do essentially what you want it to do but it may create quite a bit of latency. I'm not sure how it will sound during play/playback but you can send audio from the Receptor to a DAW using this method. Otherwise I would look into the Optical out of the 1818 interface (which is currently the only interface that works with a Receptor).

The way that I have worked with this from back when I had a recetor1 was to have a separate mixer for live performances to combine my live instruments with vst's, receptor effects, and my looper, and used the tape out from the mixer to record to a zoom h2 for demos, and to use lightpipe going to an RME soundcard in my computer for separate channels in studio recording. This has turned out to be the most practical way for me to approach using my quattro. This felt like a limitation at first, but if I am creating a good live mix it is not really necessary to have separate channels for live recording, and I don't generally need more that 8 channels at once if I am doing a "studio" recording-I just make sure that outputs of the presets I create allow consistent channel separation for the studio recording (i.e.-wind instruments lightpipe channels 2-3, percussion 4-5, etc).
