Cursor placement...

This may be a non-issue for Tracktion devotees but the cursor behavior in T is like in ProTools and Reaper I assume... where you click the cursor goes. Coming from the Studio One/Logic world that is frustrating and or annoying but I guess it's an acquired taste so I'm not going to say it's wrong. But it seems every time I select the track while playback is going I get the stutter effect of the song starting over aggaagggaaaiinnn.... Seems like that should be an option or maybe if you select in the track area or the bottom of the screen it doesn't reset the playback cursor? FR maybe but I really like how Tracktion has progressed so much I purchased it again. I'm running OSX 10.9.5 64 bit version... Some really cool stuff in there!

It seems to depend where you click. Clip is fine, far left is fine, just to the left of inputs restarts.
Where are you clicking and what platform are you on?

I know what you mean, mostly get this when trying to drag a fade. These are perhaps a bit too small for my laptop.

It gets a little out of control at times with all the scrolling, scaling and mouse wheeling... I really think this could be solved by adding a function to allow click on screen without moving the cursor... and clicking the time bar does reposition the cursor or something to that effect. I realize this is how ProTools works and Reaper as well (although I think they relented and added that as a setting) it would be a little less hectic at times. The F8 and F9 will get you out of the scroll mess but the hiccupping playback is pretty annoying. Probably something that is a matter of working habit I'm sure...

ProTools can have the 'link timeline and edit selection' setting unticked which I think is similar to what you want? Something similar would be useful here, mebbe?

Yep. I think that would be a useful setting but maybe just me...

I think I understand what you are saying too. There are couple of things that are helpful to know. There is no way presently to prevent clicking on within the edit from moving positioning the cursor. Adjusting fade handles shouldn't set the cursor. Also a single click on clip headers shouldn't set the cursor. Clicking within the body of clips or on the background does set the cursor however. There are two cursor modes, so maybe one of them is slightly better, especially if you don't like timeline zoom.

The menu item Options>Timeline drag action has two choices:

* Drag to change view (default)
* Drag to change position

You can Alt-click on the timeline to position the cursor when in 'Drag to change view' mode. In this mode you can grab right above the cursor to and drag it around. Otherwise dragging on the timeline, pans the screen left and right.

'Drag to change position' is newer. That was added during the T5 release cycle. That allows you to just click or drag on the timeline to position the cursor. In that case dragging up and down doesn't zoom in and out.

Click and drag the timeline to move the screen around without resetting the cursor.
Mouse wheel scroll to zoom in and out.

Yes, I've experimented with the various mouse settings... but there are many areas on the arrange window where clicking/selecting is necessary to change or activate something... which causes a BT style stutter effect of your song playing back. Honestly, I'm not sure why that would be a useful or necessary behavior? It would appear you have to stop playback completely to avoid this – or change your way of thinking. I'm just trying to wrap my head around the differences in T5/6 from say Studio One 2 and Logic for instance...

Can you give some examples of things you're trying to click or select in the arrange window, while playback is happening that causes this?

I'm kind of with you in the sense that during playback you possibly don't want clicking in the arrange window to reposition the cursor, but I also don't run into this issue as much as you seem to, from your description.

I do click in the arrange window quite a lot, to position the cursor, then zoom in and out around the cursor with the scroll wheel, but that is mostly with playback stopped, when i think about it

For instance... clicking in the track in "front of the input" i.e. not the actual input object – causes the playback to jump. So if I want to just select a new track... to activate a different input I get the stuttering playback unless I'm careful. Seems like that shouldn't happen. Again, Reaper added a setting to "not move the cursor" when selecting in certain areas of the arrange, or during some operations in the arrange. I think it's a ProTools convention which stems from it being a "audio program" originally... but I think if your focus is midi it's not as relevant.

I realize this is my perception (.02) but it's possibly worth noting.
