Hive: Cutoff = Volume = Normal?

hey there,

been noticing this pretty often and i find it a little annoying: When i open the (lp) cutoff filter - in a chord sequence, say - the overall output volume is rising pretty heavily, about +2dB. i know there is a plain technical side to it (more frequencies in the sound = more harmonic content = more output), but i didn't come across this issue so obviously in other synths as i do in hive.

is there a simple way to compensate for the volume change when opening/closing the filter? i did try rather extreme compressor settings, but that wasn't too convincing either... if someone has some advice i'd be thankful since at the moment i always set up a macro which is opening the cutoff while simultaneously lowering the output, which is not ideal in terms of work flow and so on...

thanks,
-simon

It depends on filter topology as well. Did you try Clean/Dirty/Normal modes?

But yes, using the mod matrix to lower the output as cutoff is raised is a good call. (Protip - you can set this once then save it as a preset!)

thanks for replying :) i'm mainly using normal mode just because i like the sound best ;) but yeah, setting this up as a default patch would definitely safe me time - at least when i work with my own presets. will give the different engines a closer look as well!

I'm not talking about the default patch. I'm talking about mod matrix preset. :) Each section in Hive can save presets of their own.

ah, i see :D right, didn't think about that possibility :tu:

You can also use compression to keep that under control. Sometimes that volume change is desired, sometimes it ain't. ;)
