Odd behaviour with pitch wheel in MPowerSynth

Although I bought MPowerSynth some time ago I haven't had time to get to grips with it until now - now that the OSC competition is underway.

I loaded an instance of MPowerSynth onto a track in Studio One v3 64-bit and selected the PWM Lead patch in the Lead/Dirty section of the preset list. When I move my pitch wheel, the Volume on the Globals tab jumps to -19.8 and then goes up or down from that value, depending on which way I turn the wheel. And it's not just this preset; it's the same with others.

Obviously, I'm expecting the pitch wheel to control pitch. I've checked in the Advanced Settings window and the pitch-bend range is set to 2.0000 as I'd hoped.

Studio One recognises that I'm using the pitch bend wheel, as shown in the Control area at top left, but why is MPowerSynth not recognising it?

OSC competition?

It looks like your host/controller is sending different MIDI actually. I just checked and everything works fine. So, check the MIDI settings (MIDI button right bottom), try learning and move the pitch bend, you'll see what controller it actually sends ;).

Thanks. It could be that or something in Studio One getting in the way. I'll find time to check both out in the next few days. It's the first time I've had this happen, though I don't tend to use the pitch wheel a lot.

The One Synth Challenge. The current one is only a few days old so there's still plenty of time to join in.

I've found out what it is, though I still don't know why it is. This post is just an update in case anyone else has the same problem in future.

When I move the pitch bend wheel on my Alesis Q49 controller it puts out, as you'd expect, a series of messages with a start value of E0 hex (224 decimal) followed by the pitch data. However, at the start of the stream, just as I push the wheel, it puts out a single Controller Volume message (B0 hex or 176 decimal) with a value of 070E (1086). And when I let go of the wheel it streams the pitch changes followed by a single Controller Volume message with a value of 070D (1805).

In other words, it's wrapping the pitch change data in a pair of volume control messages. I'll have to try and dig out the manual to see if I can find out why.

Edit:
I didn't see anything in the manual but it did prompt me to try something random. I pressed the MIDI/SELECT button then the VELOCITY button to assign velocity changes to the Data Slider. For some reason, this had the effect of resetting the pitch bend wheel to its normal behaviour. Quite why this should be is beyond me. I'd expect it to work if I'd pressed the RESET button, but there you go. If any other Q49 owners have this or a similar problem, press MIDI/SELECT, RESET, MIDI/SELECT and see if it fixes things.

Aaaaha, that looks like your controller has a designed volume control and for a pretty stupid reason it sends it every time you use pitchbend :D. I'd contact the manufacturer of your controller, maybe a firmware update could fix that.

That seems unlikely to me. I reset the controller to the defaults and it no longer happens.
