Multiple assignments for one midi input source?

I can't have a single midi input assigned to multiple tracks simultaneously, correct? Nor can I have a track pre-assigned to a midi channel, right?
For example, say you have a multi timbral VST set up. It would be nice to have say 4 tracks ready to go for midi input and be able to just click on one and have your controller keyboard ready to go on that track.
Right now I drag the input "chiclet" to each track and go into the info panel and switch the midi channel, then start recording then repeat each time I want to switch to another track (versus 1 click).
I think it has to be this way because Tracktion does not have track types, but I want to make sure I'm not missing something fundamental.
I do that a lot.
Thanks.

Hi gesslr, I'm not sure exactly what routing you need but there are a couple of ways to work with MIDI channels. Firstly though, tracks don't have a concept of MIDI channel, they're format agnostic, only recorded MIDI clips have changeable channels.
1. You can create virtual MIDI devices from the "MIDI Devices" Settings page and set the input as your physical device. For each virtual device you can then enable only the required channel. In your Edit you can add your multiple virtual devices to separate tracks.
2. You can use a rack on the first track with a "MIDI patch bay" plugin to block certain channels or re-assign them to other channels. You can also use a rack to forward the MIDI input from the first track to separate tracks.
3. You can add your multiple plugins to a rack and use a "MIDI patch bay" plugin to route different channels to each instrument. Create a step clip and use the "Set destination" for an example of this configuration.
Hope that helps!

Hi.
Thanks again for responding to my post. Your 1st suggestion in particular got me 90% of the way there, but I ran into an issue. It's a bit complicated to explain, so I put together a screen capture. No sound. It's six minutes long as I use text to explain what is going on.

Basically it boils down to all midi channels firing when any one of them is selected even though midi channels are assigned correctly in the virtual inputs. I'll PM the link to the video.
Any comments are welcome!

Last thought for the day.
If I use a midi patchbay plugin, place it before the Kontakt wrapper on each track, and set it up to convert the incoming midi to the needed channel, I can simply drag and drop the input object "chicklet" and it will send to the proper midi track...no need to go in an manually change the midi channel each time.
I won't have tracks "ready to go" with just one click, and a bit more setup for sure, but it avoids the multiple tracks playing issue in my video. Not a 100% solution for me but it's better than the original workflow (as I understand it)....

Hi gesslr, I think you've found a bug that the channel is only applied to recorded clips, not during recording. I need to check this is not intended behaviour but if it is a bug we will fix it.
Glad you found a work around for the time being with the MIDI patch bay though.
