setting:no punch mode+'replace old clips': Why is old audio clip still heard when recording over it?

I've been wondering about this:
When recording over an old audio clip I can still hear that old audio clip while recording. My setting is 'no punch mode and 'replace old clips in edit with new ones'.
Of course when switching to punch mode and setting in an out markers it works fine and I don't have to listen to the clipo that is being recorded over.
But why is the old clip audible with mentioned setting above? What usecase would that be good for when the old files will be cut off after teh new recording anyway?
Or is it a bug?
