I created a step clip, assigned drumkit pieces to each channel and drew a pattern, with something just a little bit unusual: two channels are assigned to the same instrument/drum piece, and they have the same pattern. In other words, the entire channel is duplicated, pattern and instrument.
I have done that in another DAW. I like the sound that results from it. The two kicks play at the same time with kind of a "majestic" feel. In Tracktion6, they don't play exactly at the same time. They play in quick succession, but clearly not at the same time, even farther apart than a flam, which completely ruins the intended effect.
If I assign different instruments/pieces to the two channels, then they clearly play at the same time.
I thought this could be some quirkiness of the external sampler I'm using, but I rebuilt the thing with the internal sampler and still have the problem.
Sounds like a bug to me. If the two channels are told to play at the same time, they should play at the same time.

Can you maybe post a self-contained example project? I can't quite see how you've got this set up.
If I do the following where each kick is the exact same audio file they play in time: When you say that if you use different "instruments/pieces" they do play in time, doesn't this indicate that the samples are just slightly non-aligned? Have you tried just adding them to a couple of tracks as clips and seeing how they sound together (make sure there's no speed or time stretching going on)?

I appreciate your attention, but "posting" this is going to be difficult because there is an external sampler involved. You would have to have it, plus the samples and the project.
Yesterday, I tried using the internal sampler and still got the problem. I don't remember how I did it. Today, I just tried it with the internal sampler in an entirely new scratch project and could not reproduce the problem.
Basically, my arrangement looks just like what you posted, but in an external sampler. I just kind of solved it. Instead of having the two channels reference the same sample within the sampler, I duplicated the sample inside the sampler i.e. loaded it in two separate slots, and now each channel plays the same sound, only from separate samples/slots that sound exactly the same. It works that way.
I'm kind of tired because I have been doing a lot of experiments lately and it's tiresome because I'm still not fluent with the tool, so I'll drop this issue for a while, but I will try to reproduce the problem in other opportunities and will come back here if I run into anything interesting.
