Having a mind blank.
If i've got a track with a drum vst on it, and i have a folder with a few hundred midi files in it, how do I "audition" those midi files, preferably by stepping up and down through them, to find one I like? With the sound being generated by the VST on the track?

You would have to bring the midi file into the project in tracktion. And also make sure the midi pattern is on the right notes

If there's a MIDI player app that you can find that lets you do what you want, you could route the MIDI output through a MIDI loopback driver and into Tracktion for playback via your VST.

For my point of view, it's only a "routing" problem.
I've had the same problem. Hereunder I describe to you how I've resolved it...
Example...
-- Folder track is "folder 1"
-- All midi drum tracks contained in this folder are track 1 to track 100
-- The track containing the drums VSTi is Track 110
Ok. Lets go.
A. Folder and midi tracks in folder
1- I assign the folder track "Track destination" to the track where the drums VSTi is present. In our example, to Track 110.
--> you will see that all the tracks "Track destination" contained in the folder are now automatically assigned to Track 110.
2- mute all the 100 midi tracks.
B. The drums VSTi track
1- The track with the VSTi is (midi) empty and has only the drums VSTi on it. The "Track destination" set up is to "default audio output" or to "output 1+2".
2- let the "input" of the Track 110 empty, with no affectation on it ( <no input> ).
C. Listening one by one each midi track in the folder track
1- hit the play button or the space bar of your computer keyboard, and... un-mute one midi track, listen to it and re-mute it.
2- ... do this for each midi track contained in the folder track...
Done !
I've done that to select the better midi drum track suitable for my own composition. BUT...
I've had only 10 midi tracks in the folder track...
I have no idea if this solution is suitable for listening an enormous track folder with 100 midi tracks...
My 2 cents.

I tried, and it looks like they all need dragging onto tracks, but you could always highlight lots of MIDI files and drag them into a new Edit; that'd assign them all to one or more new tracks. A script to add VSTis to all tracks could be written. You could have two scripts; one to add a drum VSTi, another to add something else.
