How do a correct a terrible issue with latency when recording using my guitar, Tapco interface,& Tracktion software? Free version of Tracktion 5.

Sorta depends what the terrible issue is, Im afraid. There's lots of things it could be, so without more info we'd just be guessing at what it is. Do you mean you have a very high latency, or is it something else?

Yes, the problem is what is the issue with latency, and how are you recording. The latency shouldn't be an issue for PLAYING if you can hear the audio without Tracktion, and just tap off your mixer or amp; but if you are listening to the tracktion output of your guitar, then you may have to change some things.
If you record guitar with .vst effects (amp simulator or ditital effects), there probably will be some latency that could possibly be reduced in one manner or another.
If you record audio with the output of the guitar sound chain into an audio interface on the computer, then the latency you might encounter is the difference between the backing track or previously recorded tracks, and that's a different issue.
Are you using ASIO on the audio interface? This tends to work much better than using Directsound, and can be "tweaked" better.

Not hijacking thread I hope, but I was about to start a topic about latency so I will jump into this one instead.
Did a session today using more channels simultaneously then I ever have before. Using ADAT input with AI3 converter on my Scarlett 18i8. Bad bad latency with multiple channels tracking at the same time. Tried 12 tracks at once and no way could I get acceptable latency.
Usually can get it down if only recording a couple tracks, but whole band live lead to multiple dropped takes due to computer halts (modern hardware,Win 7, pretty clean machine).
What is best order to debug this?
- Processor?
- General PC cleanup and efficiency?
- Better DAW (using Scarlett 18i8)?
- More memory (I have 8 gigs)?
- Toggle off some Tracktion settings like smooth scrolling etc?
- Get a better ADAT converter than the Alesis AI3?
- Use ADAT ins or Analog ins not both at same time?
- Put multiple inputs to one track? (not crazy about that one..)
- only record bands at 44.1/16 not 48/24?
Naturally I am not using any plugins while recording, so there is no much ballast to throw overboard.
How much latency can people live with here on this forum? There must be a way to record a full band...

Hi Allison, I'm surprised nobody has mentioned the latency compensation you'll need to set up if you haven't already.
I'm not sure exactly if it has changed since Tracktion 5, but in Tracktion 6 and 7 you can follow these steps:
Go to Settings
Select one of your Input channels
You'll see down the bottom a "Time Adjust" field appears, and next to it an auto-detect button.
What you should do at this point is create a loopback from your output to your input, then click that button. Tracktion will briefly play a sound and will measure the delay between when it is played to when it is picked up by the input, processed and sent back through to Tracktion. It will then automatically set the latency compensation needed to record from your device.
