Tracktion Software

I'm sure it is an easy newbie thing, but I cannot find a way to mute the inputs so that I can listen to playback without howling feedback.

In the past I have done the old get er done by just turning down output on my preamp.

Sorry I am so dense to not see it, but how do I playback without feedback?

I believe the thing you're after is, via the Options button, Run Audio Engine When Stopped.

How many inputs do you have enabled? You can just deselect it, if you only have one. If more than one, then what input device(s) are you using?

I have always had this issue with just about every input device I have used...M-Audio, Tapco, Motu, and now Scarlett 18i8 and Alesis AI3 for ADAT in (like, I said I've haven't know how to do this since long before I started using the ADAT in, though that may make it worse..I don't know.

I have done these things....

- Searched and searched for the old End-to-End, which may have been the ticket...(no longer in the
master out area, cannot find comparable in Options menu)
- Thanks, but I tried the Run Audio Engine settings but that didn't to it
- Disarmed record...
- Lowered levels in the DAW (I knew that wouldn't work)
- Muted some tracks with open mics...no dice
- Tried several other setting such as realtime tracking

I must be missing something because surely people usually listen to a playback after recording? Downing the preamps is lame lame lame, but it's the only way I can make it shut up.

I'm sure it is me, but I can't think of what to try next...????

Is there a button to push that acts as 'mute inputs' to toggle on and off for playback

look in the settings under audiodevices.
when you choose an inputdevice you should get properties for it (down at the bottom of the window).
there you find "live input monitoring" (was called "end to end" in the past and was located in the inputproperties in the edit), switch that off.
that should do it. i don't know if you have to go through all inputdevices seperately or if you can switch it off for all at once.

i just saw, that you also get the "live inputmonitoring" switch in the input properties in an edit.
just select an input and look at the bottom (maybe you have to expand the panel at ghe bottom, if you have collapsed it.

just had a quick look at the scarlet 18i8.

do you
1) use the MixControl software of the interface for monitoring?
2) monitor through tracktion (via live input monitoring)?

for 2) i have described what to switch off

when you use option 1), then you have to mute the inputchannels in the MixControl software of Focusrite.

Yes, using Mixcontrol. Yes, I also had Live Input Monitoring on.

Turned of Live Monitoring, still feedback (but that makes sense).

Now, tried to mute from the Scarlett Mixcontrol. I can now bring the levels up to listening level, which is a big improvement, but muting the individual open mic channels in Mixcontrol didn't seem really mute anything, still got feedback after a point.

If I mute the master in Mixcontrol instead of the channels it turns off everything. No in between, though disabling Live Input helped make it workable.

Thank you so much for your help. I am still puzzled why there cannot just one button that would allow one touch toggling for playback. Still, my original question has been tamed down to where is it a curiosity, not a show stopper.

Once again thanks for all the very prompt and timely input. This community is fantastic.

when you have disabled "live input monitoring" on all channels in tracktion, you have to search in MixControl for the appropriate setting.
those software interface mixers can be a challenge sometimes.

check all mix pages in MixControl, if all the inputs are muted (or faders down). only the daw-faders should be open, so the output of tracktion gets routed to the interface output.

there are routing presets available, try the "mixing" preset.

Just curious - can you hear the mikes at all when Tracktion isn't running? Is it possible the feedback/monitoring is also coming in directly through the external interface and/or windows sound system directly, and not being influenced from tracktion? LiveMonitoring has that functionality, but the Mixcontrol itself may be routing mike input to output system.

You need to iron out your settings, but after you do, you may find this plugin comes in very handy for automating the muting of inputs on playback.

No, the mics are only live when Tracktion is running..if I close it the inputs are quiet. Not sure what that may mean, but I am assuming it is happening betweeen the Scarlett and Tracktion. Maybe I can try some other apps just out of curiosity to see if they all do the same thing.

when the mics are only live when tracktion is running, you still have some "live input monitoring" going on.
check it for all available inputs.

MixControl monitoring will work, even when tracktion is closed.
i'd suggest you to experiment a little with mixcontrol when tracktion is closed, to get a hold on its functionality and to be sure to rule it out, when searching for your inputmute in tracktion.

be sure to check on tracktions settings/audiodevices page after that.
also make sure you are using the asio driver for the scarlet interface.
