There really have been lots of great documentaries about music with a big focus on music production out there in the last years. Just thought we could collect them here in a thread for everyone interested in watching those.
I start with the ones FREE TO WATCH:
This came out just recently:
THE ART OF LISTENING
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This is a very interesting 6 part series made with the help of Sir George Martin (this should be online longer than it says on the page):
SOUNDBREAKING (original in english, but it's overdubbed in german)
http://www.arte.tv/guide/de/057472-003- ... es-pop-1-6
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A series about the influence of french producers:
FRENCH TOUCH (original in french, with german subtitles)
http://creative.arte.tv/de/frenchtouch
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
An older synth documentary you might already know:
SYNTH BRITANNIA
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The following you can BUY on different platforms:
Very nice one made by Dave Grohl about the iconic music studio Sound City, where some of the greatest records ever were made:
SOUND CITY
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Also from Dave Grohl, a series about how he made his latest Foo Fighters record (TIP: you can get all episodes for $20 including extra bonus material on their homepage directly https://sonichighways.vhx.tv/products/f ... ighways-us):
SONIC HIGHWAYS
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The russian synth scene history (TIP: you can get it with extra bonus material on their homepage directly http://www.elektromoskva.com):
ELEKTRO MOSKVA
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
About modular synths:
I DREAM OF WIRES
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Focusing on the stories of the big synth pioneers (TIP: you can get it on their homepage directly http://brightsparks.movie):
BRIGHT SPARKS
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The title says it all:
808
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
THE BEATLES: EIGHT DAYS A WEEK – THE TOURING YEARS

Some of those are awesome.
I've seen "sound city" SO many times. After a while though, it starts to become obvious about the cut/paste stuff which was OBVIOUSLY done on a digital editor
Oh, and Neil Young is a tool
A funny one, but a tool nonetheless.

"The Distortion of Sound is a documentary about the decline of sound quality and how technology has changed the way we listen to music. It will open your ears and inspire you to reach for richer, more soul-stirring musical experiences"

started watching "Hip-Hop Evolution" last night on Netflix. not much new info, as i've read up quite a bit on the history, but it's really put together well and i've really enjoyed the first three parts so far.

edit, n/m, I'm ballistic enough today
I watched one of those shows and they said you had to have 4 things to be "hip hop" :
-graffiti
-rap
-breakdancing
-and a DJ.
I hope it was made in like 1989, cuz dat ain't tru no more (not to mention that's enough to not want anything to do with it
)

breakdancing? They called it breakdancing? They clearly know nothing about "it" if they refer to it as breakdancing!incubus wrote:edit, n/m, I'm ballistic enough today
