2 PC or not 2 PC. That is the question?

I have done a search but not really found much :?

Scenario:
My 1.6 Ghz PC is coughing up blood (thanks to Z3ta+) and I don't really wanna bounce 10 tracks down to one. That's too restrictive.
So the options are:

1. Buy a new CPU and motherboard. Maybe Xp2600 for £130. Even though that's not much faster than my xp2000, but I just think the faster models are too expensive considering the small amount of speed you are getting.

2. V-stack / Chainer. System link.
This requires a 2nd pc, which I have P3, 550 mhz :)
But also requires a decent soundcard in that pc. I only have an SB live, which I don't think will do. So, do I need at least something like Audiophile 24/96? They are still around £130 I believe.

3. FX Teleport. Network connection. Requires 2 network cards, 1 in each pc. This seems like the cheapest option. Unfortunately I haven't been able to find much information regarding this. Does it do the job?

Another thing is; the 2nd pc is in another room. Firstly this would require about 10 meter long network/ SP-DIF cables, which could also cost a bit or what?
And say, I just used the other pc for 3 or 4 instances of Z3ta+. I presume I would have to flick through the presets on that pc (slave), not the one I'm working at (master). That would be a bit difficult, as I wouldn't be able to hear my tune from that room. :? I suppose that would work with The Grand, as you are just working with a piano, but if you are messing with the oscilators/filters etc. you need to hear the tune meanwhile. :?

So, what do you guys do?

I heard that M-Audio just dropped their prices, probably to compete with EMu would be my educated guess, so now $99 for the Audiophile instead of $149 for example.

Anyway, What is your budget, and what parts EXACTLY do you have? Give me the full spiel!

why buy a new motherboard? just get a new cpu..

however, you're going to probably need faster memory to take full advantage of something like a a 3000+ or 3200+ cpu ..which is what I'd get if I were you (I have the same 2000+ cpu)

I think you can use DDR333 based memory on the 3000+ but the max for a 3200+ is the DDR400

I use the FX-T option and it works very well. The network card are cheap and the crossover cable also.

You can switch presets easy from the main computer or from your midi keyboard. To tweak the presets you will need to work directly on the server computer. I use both PC on the same desk to make it easy, but you would probably be able to install remote control over windows XP if they are in different rooms.

Personally I generally find FX Teleport too much bother to use.
Yeah, 1.6 Ghz isn't particularly fast. I'm almost out of trouble with my 2.4, but not completely.
Every day takes figuring out all over again how to f#ckin’ live.

PS: I should also mention that you can use automation and control surfaces from your main computer to control the remote synth.

Thanks for the replies.
DevonB: My budget is almost non-existant. :(

What EXACTLY do I have.
Main pc: running Cubase SX, Terratec DMX6 fire, xp2000 CPU, no network card, Winxp.
2nd pc: SB live, no network card, Xin 98se, P3 550 mhz.

Just checked a couple of dealers. Audiophile 2496 is £70 in the UK. A lot less than I thought, but to be honest I'd rather spend that on software or CPU upgrade.

VitaminD: I can't just do a CPU upgrade. I just did a quick search on the net. To my surprise my motherboard supports up to Xp2400, but that's still too small a speed to do an upgrade. Even 2600 is pushing it I think. So, new cpu= new mobo.

Post

thats a bummer.. what motherboard and speed memory do you have?

Post

Get a mobile xp2500 barton and run it at 400fsb with a 11x multiplier. Instant xp3200. And rock solid.

It's either DDR266 or DDR333. I thinks it's DDR333. I would really like to wait 6 or 12 months with the CPU upgrade though. I just listed my options.

So, realisticly I think the options are V-stack/Chainer/FX teleport/ doing lo-fi tunes :D

Post

hey, I have a desktop xp2500 barton

but it is said not to be possible to tweak...

can this be true?

how to check that?

I bought the cpu 12 months ago

ahhh thats good news.. you could run a 3000+ no probs with the ddr333 mem :)

however I wouldnt even seriously look at new cpus (pricing) until around the time you are ready to purchase.. 6-12 months is A LOT of time for prices to change (for the better).. :o

No it's not impossible to tweek. The multiplier may well be locked at 11 but you can still up the fsb from it's recommended 166 to 200, without any worries.

Done a bit more research.

I'm a bit keen on trying out FX Teleport.
Now, I'm wondering whether I should try a firewire network, a gigabit with network cards or just 10/100 mbps?

Post

Never tried firewire. Gigabits are WAY too much money and 10/100 does a pretty decent job for me.
