Hello all,
Just wanted to introduce myself as a newcomer to the forum.
I am also a brand new user of Tracktion 5 (just installed it!) and new to computer music as well. I have a Nektar Impact 61 and an i3 Windows laptop.
I have quite a few years experience in music and am a pretty good keys/piano player, even though I am between hammer action keyboards (sold my Korg TR due to space reasons and to explore software instruments) Not so much for guitar!
Looking forward to reading up on the forum and getting into recording, soft instruments and making music.
Thanks!
Jon

Thanks for the welcome! Going to try and orchestral piece first with SSO, VSCO or VPO first. Then on to some acoustic songs. Any good drum samples or VSTs out there for free?
I checked on jumping to T7 but it looks like on the website it's not offered as an upgrade. Only can jump to waveform.

Just to give you a heads up. the user guide for waveform has some incorrect info regarding the marketplace( waveform no longer has integrated marketplace access).
aside from that waveform is not much different to previous version of tracktion ( v5/6 onwards)
And just so everyone knows, when you buy tracktion/waveform you are basically a perpetual beta tester and paying for the privilege.( that pretty much goes for a lot of software in development these days because technology is moving at an ever faster pace).

So I should stick with free one for now. Options to move to paid DAW other than Tracktion seem like Reaper or something much more expensive. Still the beta testing would be there! So free one for now seems good.

If you are budget conscious and are looking at long term usage, try Fl studio , It has matured nicely since its early days and you only pay for the daw ONCE, all future version updates are FREE FOR LIFE!!!jmcmillan wrote:So I should stick with free one for now. Reaper is a good alternative as well,( although its not free and you do pay for each major version) , They don't have cumbersome copy protection though as they rely on the honesty of the customer to poney up. go figure.( all you will get is a gentle reminder every so often if you don't do the honourable thing)
About the only thing that I can say in waveforms/tracktions favour is the minimalist footprint of the DAW. It is a capable DAW despite its relatively small size. so yeah if your wanting to stick with Tracktion, hold onto t5, despite anything you may hear to the contrary it does work well on windows 10(both 32 bit and 64 bit)

I have T5 and Waveform. I really like the additional features in Waveform. If it works well on your system, it would be the best, most affordable DAW to get started with. The minimalist Tracktion UI is very intuitive, compared to a few other DAWs I have used (Reaper, Live, Sonar). It takes very little effort to set up a project and get started.
If you are just getting into computer recording and virtual instruments, this is a great way to start!
You can always download the demo of Waveform and see how you like it.

Thanks! I'm liking the UI as well. Seems very easy to understand signal flow. Now I just have to wade through the ocean of VSTs! Trying to find good ones and free (for now) takes some time and patience.zzz00m wrote:If you are just getting into computer recording and virtual instruments, this is a great way to start!

Great tip! I was not aware of that one. Watched the video. Perfect if you don't already have a few kits laying around. Maybe useful even if you do! Nice MIDI composer feature.terrynoakes wrote:Quite a nice easy to use drum vst here.

I also like the fact that you can set it to send MIDI out, so that you can use the provided grooves and fills with drum sounds in other VSTs in your project if you wish.

Here is a good video walkthrough of T7. It really shows some of the unique features of Tracktion and some tricks you can do with the clips that make Tracktion a powerful music production tool. This guy is very entertaining and has produced a good series of videos on music tech. His main DAWs are Bitwig, Ableton Live, and Studio One. So his reactions to Tracktion are unfiltered.jmcmillan wrote:Thanks! I'm liking the UI as well. Seems very easy to understand signal flow. Now I just have to wade through the ocean of VSTs! There are a lot of good free instruments available. If you are looking for synths, it is very easy. For sampled real instruments it is a bit more challenging, but there are a few.jmcmillan wrote:Thanks! I'm liking the UI as well. Seems very easy to understand signal flow. So just to get you started ... have fun ...
Probably the 800 lb gorilla of free synths is Synth1. an oldie, but a goodie! There is a link to 14,000+ free patches (contains 173 free sound banks)! The GUI is not very inspiring (although you can switch the color scheme as desired).
But the sounds! Wow! This thing is awesome! There is also a beta 64-bit version that runs in Windows 10 just fine, the 1.13beta.

U-he Zebralette - Zebralette is a single oscillator plucked from Zebra2 and transplanted into a much
simpler, easy-to-learn framework. As the Zebra2 oscillators are so powerful, Zebralette
is a great little synth in its own right – with the same pristine basic sound as Zebra2. The
LFOs, MSEG and effects in Zebralette are also simplified versions of those in Zebra2.
