I'm looking for a masterkeyboard (USB) with transport controls that work with Waveform ... any recommendations?

Post

That's pretty vague...

- need drum pads?
- how many octaves?
- need portability? 2 octaves good enough?
- need channel or polyphonic aftertouch?
- budget ?
- are you used to a piano or synth style keyboard ?

No

4 or 5

No, will stay in my homestudio

Don't know ... Will play piano and Hammond sounds ;)

Should be under 200 €

I'm a beginner. Startet with a Korg Nanokey and want to upgrade now.

icon i-Keyboard 4 USB MIDI keyboard controller ? Many out there, if you dont have any external transport controls, I'd go for one with that option.

That's a good question There are 25 kwerty keyboard shortcuts in Waveform that can be mapped to transport functions. How many of them are automatically mapped to a MIDI keyboard controller?

Or are you dependent on a MIDI keyboard that can send kwerty keyboard shortcuts exclusively?

I think transport control will work out the box with any keyboard (the ones with piano keys that is, )that has them.
If the keyboard has any other buttons or sliders. They can be mapped via Tracktion/Waveform.
Fairly confident thats the case, sure if I'm wrong or there are better options someone else may chime in.

From a MIDI keyboard perspective, all I would ask is that the transport buttons were functional in the DAW. There are probably better options for controlling the other details within a DAW.

I have a couple of keyboards where the transport buttons can be used easily in 3 other DAWs, but so far I am shooting blanks with Tracktion Waveform.

If anybody has a recipe for how to map or learn MIDI CC from keyboard transport buttons, I am all ears!!!

I tried to create a custom control surface in Waveform for my keyboard, but was unable to define any transport functions.

I found out that Swissonic Controlkey 49, 61 & 88 have a preset scene to work with Tracktion.

Do you have a link to that info?

Only in german. There's a review from a german webzine:

There are preset scenes for :

Logic
Pro Tools
Cubase
Ableton Live
Cakewalk
Reason
Traktion
Motu Digital Performer
MK Control
Acid Pro
Audition
FL Studio
Nuendo
Magix
Presonus Studio One

... think I should give it a try.

Thanks to Google translate, I got this:
PRO
good, solid "synth" keyboard
German manual
Practical integration as a DAW controller in Apple Logic
stable housing
Fader and encoder position via LED

CONTRA
DAW integration not always successful (eg Pro Tools)
relatively heavy
very loose fader caps
So maybe a bit more digging as far as the integration with Tracktion is called for. What I have seen is a lot of companies can claim integration, but it often comes down to some, but not all features. :(

The demos I have seen of some Nektar keyboards shows some have very good integration with some specific DAWs (Tracktion not included). Probably better than most.

For integration with VSTs, the best options today are the Native Instruments Komplete Kontrol S Series keyboards, but only with NKS compatible instruments. Alternatively the Akai Advance keyboards using the VIP software plugin offer a good integration with VST plugins, but not the DAW.

I use Akai VIP with a compatible VIP integrated keyboard, and that is a good experience with plugins. At this point maybe pairing a VIP keyboard for the plugins, with a hardware control surface for Tracktion would be the optimal solution?

But if you do discover an all in one, I'd love to hear about it! :tu:

I sent a mail to Thomann askins for the compatibility of Tracktion Waveform and that Keycontrol ...

Post

Bought a used Swissonic Keycontrol 61 today.
It's just easy. Switch the keyboard to "Traktion" scene, select Mackie Control inside Waveform and everything works. The faders are connected to the first eight tracks, transport buttons do what they should.
