,and that shows gui.I asked a mate to try, and it worked ok for him, but he has the full all singing and dancing melodyne installed. Bill is using the next version up.
I'm wondering if it is restricted in essentials version.

Try copying all tracks to a new project, and hope it will works.

I had several issues with Melodyne Essentials in W8, including not being able to open the interface as you describe. I also had issues with the clips not auditioning properly (double clicking inside the clip to hear it's contents - Melodyne enabled or not on that particular clip). When I would mysteriously get Melodyne to open it's GUI, it would not play the edited (slid) notes to hear the pitch adjustment.
Working with Tracktion support, here's what we found that resolved all issues on my system:
Make sure you have - Run Audio Engine when Stopped - enabled under Options.
Also try changing the Audio buffer setting on the Settings tab to a different setting then back. This seems to reset something for Melodyne, which wakes it up. You may also need to lower the buffer setting (smaller number) for Melodyne to be happy.
Next beta version should have a popup reminder to enable the audio engine when stopped.
As for the need to toggle buffer settings, not sure if that will soon be resolved.
