This might be obvious, but it’s not working as expected. Let’s check how supportive this group can be…
How can one use an audio track to shape the overall amplitude contour of a MIDI track? Constantly adjusting the levels so that they match.
In a way, it should be something like sidechain expansion (or sidechain compression taken the other way around), but my attempts haven’t been conclusive.
Got a nice audio clip of solo singing. After playing with Melodyne Essential (thanks, Tracktion, for bundling it in Waveform!), ended up getting Waves Tune to produce MIDI from audio. Working pretty well to double the voice with a softsynth (using the Silverwood ensemble from Reaktor), except that all notes are at the same velocity.
My idea is that the envelope of the original can shape the envelope of the MIDI track.
Tried some expander and compressor plugins (including the first-party one) but haven’t found a way to make them shape the signal in direct correlation with the sidechain (as opposed to inverse correlation).
Tried the Envelope Following modifier in Waveform 9 but it sounds like it doesn’t do sidechaining.
Again, this might be obvious. But it’s difficult to find information about this, as most uses of sidechaining are to adjust dynamics in the other direction. Solving this could enhance my Waveform learning experience.
Thanks!

The Envelope Modifier in W9 should do what you want:
1) Make your audio track a bit taller and drop the envelope modifier above the plugins (This way it won't auto assign to any plugin)
2) Hit the assign button in the modifier
3) Select Vol & Pan or your Synth on your MIDI track
4) From Parameters tab move volume or gain
Now audio track envelope should control midi track level

Great! Thanks a lot. The envelope modifier can be a bit confusing (including the fact that you need to drop it on a plugin), but it sounds like it may have worked. Actually, the audio signal might be more normalized than first expected, so the audible effect is quite subtle. But the volume level on the MIDI track is going up and down as needed.FigBug wrote:The Envelope Modifier in W9 should do what you want:
