AFAIK you should have a specific hardware controller called NUKE to be able to use this synth in a reasonable way... and these are only second hand, rare and pretty expensive.

It is not based on Hartmann Neuron. It is Hartmann Neuron - the actual engine ported to Mac.
For what I know, it is possible to use it without the NUKE controller - it is sort of joystic intended to work with these round "morph" panels, technically it should be possible to operate them with a mouse.

You may think you can fly ... but you better not try

I never got around to trying this. The VST 2.3 compatible host requirement was a bit of a pain as I didn't have any back when I was running 10.6. Now that I'm on 10.12 I'd say the chances are even slimmer. I'd probably need to use a basic VST host of some kind.
It'd be great if someone could update this to support more modern standards including AU but I guess that's probably unlikely.

It's not, but they do respond to midi cc, but it's so much smoother with the NUKE as it also switches between the 3 levels and operates the filter and various knobs.recursive one wrote:It is not based on Hartmann Neuron. It is Hartmann Neuron - the actual engine ported to Mac.

Shame its not for windows.egbert101 wrote:Kinda. The video is recent, here is the blurb underneath the video:Halonmusic wrote:This has been free for years hasn't it?
This is the VST based on Axel Hartmann and Stephan Bernsee’s creation that was also also for sale for a short time before the company folded. It came with a controller (Nuke) which also acted as copy protection. Fortunately Stephan Bernsee has updated the code as much as possible to make the Neuron no longer tied to the controller and it now is available for free via his website and the Neuron facebook group.
The VST is built around the older VST 2.1 SDK which means the code is not compatible with most DAW’s today. You will need an Intel Mac running a VST Host that supports the older system. A full list of supported clients & links to downloads are available at http://www.neuron-synth.com/
Unfortunately the windows code base has been lost and is no longer able to be updated.
The Clip was composed 100% on the VST and no effects besides some compression was used.

This guy is now the CTO and main developer of Zynaptiq. Neuron was a failed experience, and I don't think he wants to repeat it (and yes, that's old news). He is a brilliant programmer. I remember talking with him in Frankfurt, and they were very interesting talks, still in the Prosoniq era. He was then developing the algorithm that became the basis of Ptchmap.egbert101 wrote:It's probably all down to this guy, and whether he would ever take up the project again:Halonmusic wrote: Shame its not for windows.

It's a shame because it sounds amazing to me.

It's super old news and it's been free forever.
I remember when if came out. The hardware version was rather expensive but sounded nice. Unfortunately the hardware was just running on not so expensive general purpose components and felt overpriced. It also felt like a one trick pony.
The software version was also over 900$ if I remember correctly. It kind of felt underwhelming and in the end it seemed that there's nothing one couldn't get out of synths like Wavestation or FM7 with some processing.
So this synth was one of those that sounded better in concept than in practice.

If I remember correctly, Synaptic has stated that update is unlikely because the source code is lost. But I might be remembering it wrong.sprnva wrote: It'd be great if someone could update this to support more modern standards including AU but I guess that's probably unlikely.
