creating drums in tracktion - newbe ?

ok so i have really no concept of how to create drum tracks in tracktion. i am currently recording tracks with guitars banjo, vocals etc... and would like to add drums. i know there is this fancy way to create sampled drums (that sound just like real drums) and put them in my songs, but i don't have any clue how. i've heard people talk about programs like battery/reason, but i don't have an overarching concept of how to use a sample program and put those samples in tracktion.
can someone explain the basic idea? and then maybe suggest the best program/plugin whatever for realistic sounding drums?
thanks a ton!

theres quite a few routes you can take really
depending on how much you wanna spend
how much flexibilty you want
and what kind of drum proggramming you want to do
if you have plenty of money and dont really want to do too much im told groove agent from steinberg is the way to go
if you have no money and are willing to spend a little time programming
get over to http://www.artisticrecordings.com/web/t ... ampler.htm
and download some of the artistic audio drumkits theres 13 free ones the last time i looked
and if you like em please spend 15 dollars and buy theyre bread and butter drums
they supply a lot of free sample archives for tracktion and deserve our support
on the other hand if you want something sort of in between then you could wait a few days and our new plug will be ready at http://www.tracktionfaction.com/ this plug is a recycled beat player
which means you have the convenience of a straight loop that you can just loop in the sequence but with the full programabilty that a drum machine would give you
each loop comes with ten midi groove files so the default bank will have 4000 groove combinations
enough to get you started
oh and there will be expansion banks made available aswell
so those are a couple of choices to think of
personally if i were you id get straight over to artistic and check out the drumkits and the tutorials on how to install an archive into T's sampler
then decide what you want to do after trying to program some beats
anyway goodluck

I am also a newbie who has been trying to find an easy way to add drum tracks. I've decided to try the combination of FXpansion's DR-008 drum machine/sampler with MusicLab's SlicyDrummer to creat drum beats/loops. Kevin Rossiter over at TraxMusic.org did a nice write up on this combination, called "Drumming for Non-Drumers":

Last time I checked FXpansion had DR-008 on sale for $99.

Get yourself a copy of Computer Music. Each month it has a free drum sample player and a sampler, besdies a few other nice bits and bobs to boot. Being vst format, tracktion will happliy host them all - though multi output vsts are not fully catered for yet. Tutorials for these instruments can be gotten from CM's own web site as can drum kits for the sampler.
If nothing else, these will get you started and help give you an idea of how you want to get drums into your music. As Rack Bitz rightly says, there are a number of degrees of effort involved in the various ways of drum programming - find out what suits you and your needs.

if you need help on this visit
http://www.adbe.org/
http://www.tracktionfaction.com
you should be able to find a tutorial there
also non of the CM plugs are mac but this might change
macwise i would say i havent got a clue but
when retractor comes out you will be able to use the sample archives directly in T's sampler
but i still stand by my earlier remark
get over to artistic they have sample archives there already and THEY WILL WORK ON MAC
hope this helps
cheers

Cheers for the tip on multi-out instruments in T - I'll look into it. As I say, I don't much use T for hosting instruments myself, except through re-wire, but it is always nice to know how to do it properly for when I might need to.Rack Bitz wrote: multi out vst's are fully catered for in tracktion you just put em in a rack

The Mac issue... its changed. The CM plug-ins got Mac'ed a few months ago so they are fine so long as you are using OS9. I have no idea how well they work on mac though.
cheers

what is this "0S9" you speak of?meahos wrote:... so long as you are using OS9.
haha. does somebody still use OS9? is it like an 8track?
so honestly, somebody worked on plugins a few months ago that are only supported on a 6 year old OS??? that's odd.
thanks everyone for your comments and suggestions; much appreciated.

CM plugins are OS9 and OSX. Been that way for a long time now. Running them all in OSX in Tracktion no problem.

You could use a combination of reaktor and battery:
there's this great ensemble in reaktor called memory drum, and one of the instruments is called drum 16, which is a 16 track sequencer which allows you to set pitchbend and velocity. You cut it out and paste it in an empty ensemble. Then you use the IAC drivers to connect the midi output of the ensemble (running as a standalone) to the input of the IAC bus in tracktion, which you can in turn connect to a track in which you use battery as a plugin... A great way to record the midi direcly into tracktion. The main drawback is that you'll have to cut out the loop from a midi clip in trackion, and that there is no way to sync reaktor and tracktion as far as i know...

Cool idea, but I wouldn't recommend a Reaktor/Battery hybrid drum setup to a newbie
I would look at either Linplug RM IV or NI Battery. Both have very intuitive interfaces, and come with some pretty good kits. DR-008 IMO has an awful interface, though its more flexible than the other two drum machines.
Or, you could go the free route. Download the free sfz sampler from rgc audio, and you can load the awesome, free nskit (www.nskit.com) into it. Or dozens of other free soundfont kits. Good luck!

If you want to do Mac OSX, the only choices are Battery, or the sampler... Make a bunch of mapped kits for BD, snare, HH, and percusion... To load in the Tracktion sampler. Load em in seperate channels, and program away! Battery of course is multi-out, so it does work... Most everything else either doeesn't work very well in Tracktion, or ain't OSX! Oh, LMIV MKII will work multi-out... never mind, it sucks! Good Luck!

There are some other OS X things out there. I've not checked it out but idrum and ritmo come to mind. Try a search of osxaudio.com and kvr's vst and au sections.
