How to change Performances or program slots with Program Change.

I pretend to use TX16Wx as a sampler for live, and for every new song I will need a new set of sounds. I already understand that I can use Program Change commands for this.

So I prepared a little project in Cubase, loaded three performances, each with two slots. Later on I created one track with program changes, routed to TX16wx at channel 1.

Playing back that project no programs nor performances are changed. I am aware of the PROGRAM CHANGE MODE option in the MIDI/External Controls, and I tried both for changing PERFORMANCE and for changing PROGRAMS, with no success.

What am I missing?

I am using Windows 7 Pro 64 bit with Cubase Pro 9 host and TX16Wx 2.4.2d 4351.1048

Thanks in advance.
Greetings.

If you set program change mode to "performance", and send a program change on any MIDI channel, TX16Wx will switch active performance to this (just verified it is not broken). But the program change number must match the performance number. Maybe you are accidentally sending the wrong number?
Did you test just using a MIDI controller sending program change? Maybe it is some cubase quirk?

Hello!

Thank you very much for your quick reply.

I send the Program Change messages from within Cubase. I just downloaded the last version of TX16wx.
I tried the following setups:
- TAL Bassline: working
- Yamaha RM 50 (hardware synth) working
- TX 16 Wx: change Performance - not working
- TX 16 wx: change program - not working

I was about doing an empty performance, but after having deleted all performances, I cannot create channel slots anymore.

I am going to investigate further.
All the best.

You have to have a performance to create slots. And you need two or more performances to be able to switch between them.

I assumed this already. I have at least three performances pre-loaded into TX before using Program CHanges.

I just made a test with SAVIHost and Program Change works there without problem. Seems to be a Cubase - related error. Tried in Cubase Pro 9 and Pro 8, with same negative result.
Too bad.

UPDATE:
Fun Fact: I inserted VSTForx in Cubase 8 as some kind of metaplugin, and Program CHange works as expected in TX. Did the same in Cubase 9, no success.

Thanks for your time and effort.

Just a heads up: If you mean Savihost "next program/prev program" or program selector, this is not using MIDI program change, but VST preset selection (non-MIDI, plugin selector).
Cubase should be able to automate the same preset selection if MIDI program change is not working for you.

I´ll give it a try right now...

Hello!

Appearently there is no way of changing programs inside Cubase via VST. Actually there are only channel settings (for audio), Param000-127 from TX itself and Continous controllers 0 to 127 (which means, that there is no Program Change as VST automation neither, didn´t know that).

On SAVIHost:
I programmed a slider in CTRLR and made it send Prg Change to SAVIhost via a virtual MIDI cable. That did work...

NEWS FLASH!

I just installed latest version of TX and restarted my computer and now Prg Change seems to work as expected.
What about that?

Sorry about the hassle caused.
All the best.

Hello elcallio...

Sorry for bothering you again, but I just wanted you to know, that I faced the same PROGRAM CHANGE NOT WORKING again on another Windows 7 64 bit machine, once again inside Cubase Pro 9. I wish this wouldn´t happen...No idea, why this keep occurring.

Greetings.
