I've only ever messed with a waveshaper briefly, and that was for distortion, so trying to make sense of something I'm seeing.

If you drop the upper right handle down 24dB, then compensate with 24dB of gain, is that essentially just the same as turning the input down 24dB and back up, or is it ratio compressed and compensated... or is the case that whenever the line is straight, there is no differentiation between the two? If so, is that only true in a particular mode?

I would have guessed that compressing the dynamic range, then normalizing the output would result in a net LUFS gain, but that does not appear to be the case. Perhaps I am misunderstanding something about the way the scales are represented, and it is effectively just performing straight attenuation? Much odder, in Log mode, dropping the peaks in this way by 24dB, and then normalizing actually results in a net DECREASE of 1.6LUFS.

What exactly am I missing here. Shouldn't it be compressing, and therefore raising the LUFS when gain compensated?

I didn't try, but you are mixing apples and oranges really. Peak level and LUFS level is something VERY VERY different. Try a sine wave at 0dBFS and noise at 0dBFS, very different LUFS...
