Hi,
how can I record the MIDI output of a synthesizer within Waveform 9 ? Say I have programmed a complex arpeggio on a particular synth but needed to edit the MIDI notes further, how can this be done? So far I'm only getting the held notes to be recorded not the movement of the arpeggio itself..thanks for any help.

This may not be possible and it's the fault of the hardware, usually. Many keyboards do not export the MIDI values of their arpeggiators, so all you usually get is exactly what you're getting: the notes you pressed only.

Options:

1. If the keyboard has an internal sequencer, see if the sequencer can record the arpeggiation, and export that into Waveform.

2. If the arpeggiator has a CC# number, put that into your clip in Waveform to trigger the correct arpeggiation each time. Your keyboard won't know the difference, and you should get consistent results. That's great for audio recording, but if you're planning to export the MIDI into sheet music, this won't do you any good.

3. If the pattern is simple enough, you can always recreate it by stepping. Of course, I suspect if that were the case, you wouldn't be asking!

4. Worst case, you can record it as an audio clip, in isolation, and let Waveform split the music into individual notes. There are a few threads and some videos that provide more details.

If your keyboard does pass arpeggiation as MIDI values, you may need to use your keyboard "set up" to ask it to...for example, on mine, there's a specific option in "Quick Setup" that routes the output of the arpeggiator to the DAW. If I don't select this option, I just get the notes I press. If I select it, I get the output of the arpeggiator.
Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube, and even Deezer, whatever the hell Deezer is.

You might be able to use the Arpeggio option of the Pattern Generator to save you some bother.

Sorry, Im using a plugin synth with an arpeggio sound. How do you midi output the arpeggio from the plugin?

Which plugin?

I haven't tried these, but they look interesting. Not sure if they're 64-bit or not.

To "edit" the notes to customize, set the input of a new track to the output of this one and record the MIDI events one time ?

If you are using a plugin synth that has the option to route the arp to MIDI output you can do this. For example, it works with SynthMaster and SynthMaster One, which each have an option in settings for this feature. But not all plugins are capable of routing MIDI out, so it is a case by case with the plugin.

To record the arp to a MIDI track:

1. Setup the arp in the synth.

2. Create a new track and select input as the MIDI track that the arp synth is located on.

3. Arm the new track for recording.

4. Start recording and play the arp. The pattern will be recorded on the new track.
